So here I am, reading a surprisingly interesting sci-fi book called "The complete Atopia Chronicles" when all of a sudden I find this bit in it:

"The world population was declining and fertility rates were collapsing. I didn't have to add the failing prospects for the Yen and greenback, as bitcoin derivatives gained ground."

---

WTF?

Anyhow, if you like sci-fi, this is so far a very good read.

Wow, nice find, this is actually pretty significant.  Not only because it's one of the few mentions so far of Bitcoin in mainstream pop culture (a necessary precursor to get average folk comfortable using Bitcoin) but also the author uses it not for illegal stuff but instead paints a future where Bitcoin has successfully displaced other currencies.  First The Good Wife, now this book, next: we need a mention in some blockbuster movie, I predict that will happen in 2014.

I just wrote Matthew Mather on facebook if he's willing to accept bitcoin as direct payment for that book. I also mentioned him bitpay as an alternative. He has blog where he could integrate it. We'll see. Smiley

Had to dig up the release date, fixed now.

Wow.   Is that the first mention of bitcoin in literature?   (though I guess the definition of what is and what is not literature is a bit blurry)

I'm about to start reading Rapture of the Nerds by Cory Doctorow and Charles Stross. I know Stross knows about Bitcoin and I think Doctorow probably does too. I wouldn't rule out the possibility that there's a mention of Bitcoin in the book since it was published in December.
