Hello bitcointalk forum!

I am new here, not "really" new to bitcoin. I have been following for a few years now but not so much mining.

My first rig was the BFL Jalapeno (~5GHs one) and after that rig paid for itself quick and things went down from there is when i stopped.

Anyways, I have access to free electric and would like to start mining again! I honestly should of posted here first asking for advice but i got excited and went ahead and was able to get 2 Antminer S4s for really cheap. I did do a little research and hope this is right but for what i could find used and for what i was willing to spend right away (under $400) this seemed to be my best bet.

Im not looking to turn this into a huge mine or anything crazy, just something I can add to my income to basically cover my lunch expenses Smiley

Just looking for any advice or information on whats new with bitcoin, From the bitcoin calculators i used with everything at current market price with no fee from electricty looks promising, what do you think? Also im not sure what pools to mine or what all these payout types even mean :|

THANKS FOR YOUR TIME ON READING THIS!

Which country are you referring to that has give you free electricity?
I can only think of smaller parts of China and some parts of South America from what I have read on the forums so far.

For eth coin  since you have a data center  you can do some closed case builds.

I know exactly where that is haha, but im down in FL now. I would be able to put together an Ether rig myself (maybe buy 2 390s) but its setting up the software which I dont know, Ill have to look at some guides.

With free power, you think this would be a better route currenty to put money into?

A little of both.  for software  I could mail you a usb stick.

you only need change the Eth address.

you can open an account here

https://bittrex.com/

transfer   like .05 btc to a btc address then buy  1 eth coin

you will get an eth address   and you can mine to it  by putting it into  you bat file .

it is easy to setup .  there are many software choices I only do two of them. (I am  so so with software)

This sounds good to me, Id like to dabble in a little of both. I currently have a computer i can put together with a R9 290X, would this suffice to start? Im really starting this more for hobby, learning, and plan for growth. If the 290X build won't be worth it, how much money are we looking at to get a decent Ether rig going? Most likely I would just need to buy a bigger PSU and the GPUs.

290x will mine ETH quite nicely, abet not exactly at a low power consumption level.

My "big rig" is triple R9 290s Sapphire Reference cards, with one of The Stilt modified BIOS on them to drop the power draw and let them run a lot cooler - still doing some fine-tuning on it to maximise the hashrate, but they're pulling right around 30 MH/s each right now running qtminer (I've NEVER been able to get on bloody github, so trying one of the "more efficent" miners like Claymore's or Genoil's just isn't an option for me).

Thats the exact card that i have. Ive never been a fan of the referenced cooler but im glad to hear that its a decent start for ETH.

At end of month not to long away we will be getting into 400 series on GPU's.  So keep that in mind with current purchases you might get a better deal at end of month when 380's are old news (but still good cards).  We have not seen any of the new AMD mine ETHER so it's all speculation but we might see more bang for your buck waiting till end of month.

As far as BTC... it's S9 it's king of efficiency on SHA256.   So will be likely all about them unless BW hit's spec and tries to sell to public soon.  But with free.. again waiting might be smart.  I think after having there will be some good deals on S7's.

So it's not fun but in both cases for free I think waiting might be your best bet.

The first presumption is that the new RX 480 will actually be availaibly in quantity - track record of the GTX 1080 is making that look kinda iffy right now.

The second presumption is that folks will be able to get RX 480 at close to it's list price - I suspect that will not happen for a month or two, "new card gouge on price" is an old tradition even when the availability is pretty good.

On the other hand, unless you can get a current card pretty cheap, it MIGHT make some sense to "wait and see" what actually happens on availability, pricing, and how well the RX 480 can mine in fact as opposed to the current "speculation only" situation.

S9 though is DEFINITELY a "wait for price to come down and competiton to show up" situation IMO - the current price is a ripoff, though I'm sure Bitmain intends to sell as many units at the current crazy-high pricing as they can while they can to help pay for the development costs on the new chip.

I'm NOT saying I BLAME them for the pricing, as there's good business logic behind "charge as much as the customers will bear while we can", just that I'm not willing to pay that large of an early adopter premium myself on a miner that will probably be profitable for years.

*Hopefully* I was planning on buying 2 RX480s for my computer build next month, won't be using for mining but they will free up my other R9 290X and ill probably just use them for mining ETH if i get that going. Other than that though I dont plan on spending anymore money out of pocket until I get what I have now up and running for atleast a month.

I think it could be a smart idea.  QuintLeo is right i am speculating that it hit's street on time, and is not jacked up on price.   Since we have not really seen selling out of GPU's like we did during LTC day's... I think it will be a little more mild. But I could be wrong.

Also ETH difficulty will go up (hard to say how much) so waiting could hurt on that.  But hopefully  new cards are faster and help some with this, but we don't know.   But value wise the new GPU's should hold value better with being brand new if you have to sell them.

This is what i was thinking initially. Although i don't have endless money or a large bankroll to start. I took what i was comfortable spending and found what was best for that while ignoring the electricity matter.
