Can't speak to Ethminer, but I've got 2 qtminer setups running mixed cards with no issues - R9 290 and R9 280x in both cases.

 You DEFINITELY have to stick with not mixing GCN and pre-GCN, and might need to stick fairly closely to the same gen (3xx and 2xx are pretty much the same gen in reality, along with some of the high-end 7xxx series) to avoid issues.

You can mix the cards you mentioned in the post. I mix 7990 with 390 without any problem so far.

I have 3x 370 on a rig, planning on replacing them with 380s one by one (the PSU will be ok);
What exactly is the process of mixing?
Is it just to install multiple drivers, then run the miner? (i'm using claymore 4.4 too.)

You don't need multiple drivers, install you card, start windows and install cat 15.12 just once

That is right. There is no special requirement for the drivers. I run the 15.11 and it is very good. I have 8 GPU in one rig.

with new gpu you need don't cumbersome risers, they consume very little, so standard ribborn riser is good enough

i have currently one rig full of 1070 with standard risers, no issue so far, no crash, very stable, i'm loving it, the only problem is that i bought a 1000w and it's not perfectly fine with 6x1070, better to go with a 1200 corsair or 1300 evga....
