No, this is not what happened.  It was either a glitch or some type of insider scam.  Watched the whole thing go down with my own eyes.  The price tanked from $575 to $561 solely with a single 0.09 BTC sell.

No, this is not what happened.  It was either a glitch or some type of insider scam.  Watched the whole thing go down with my own eyes.  The price tanked from $575 to $561 solely with a single 0.09 BTC sell.

Perhaps someone using it to buy up bitcoin form peoples stop losses.

I don't know why you would use stop loss with bitcoin...

A little earlier there was also an abnormally large spike down to 490 euro on Kraken. But I did not see that happening, so I'm assuming that someone was just selling a little to enthousiastically.

Edit: Does Bitfinex have 'dark orders' like Kraken has? So orders that do not show up on the public order book but do get executed at the moment the trader wants it to?

That is what I saw on my screen watching it as it happened.  Why do you think Bitfinex went from $575 to $561 in the span of one second while Huobi didn't budge?  It was either a glitch or some type of orchestrated scammy shit.

Maybe those "buy orders" were really fake this time? No one actually wants to buy Bitcoins except market makers selling from their left pockets to the right and back.

Their publicly available trading record proves it, and the bitfinex rep isn't denying it.

I think it's a typical form of phantom orders. It's simply the exchange itself adding non existing orders to make the order book look strong while in fact it isn't strong at all. If some one even dumps $1 worth of coins it can take the price down significantly.
