So I just started mining Monero(XMR) on my laptop(Intel Core i5 CPU) using the minergate software.
According to another discussion on this forum my hashrate should be somewhere in the range of 1800 kH/s, here's the link for that
https://bitcointalk.org/?topic=1628.0
But while using the software mentioned above it is showing me a hashrate of only ~20 H/s
What could be the reason for that ?
Could it be due to a slow internet connection ?
Also, is minergate genuine for mining purposes ?

Your hashrate isn't that low for a laptop cpu so there's no problem with your laptop or internet. The link you mentioned lists hashrates for bitcoin mining which uses the sha algo, which is completely different from Monero's algo, that also explains the difference in hashrate, if you want to mine I recommend you read up a little more and I also discourage to mine on your laptop because it's not profitable and might burn it out.

Depending on your CPU model you might be able to get higher hashrates, around 100 H/s maybe.
You could try cpuminer-opt, link is in my sig.
