I just got a 5550 in the mail from a friend.

I am trying to get it to mine...

Its NOT working... CGminer crashes... CG miner says its a Hardware issue or a driver issue.

I check with GUIminer and its got issues too... it freezes apon boot.

I remove the catalyst 13.1 drives completly and then I can open GUIminer, so I know its an issue with Cataalyst or something...

anyone have pointers?

I am poor, but i do work for Coin Smiley

Very low hash rate on that GPU, and it's not worth messing with. But if you must torture it, try an older driver version.

When the subject of buying BTC with Paypal comes up, I often remember this:

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Start with 12.4 and see where that gets you.

I went with 12.10 and CGMiner 10.5 with my 5830's and it works well. Same 5800 series.

If you have installed nothing, goto google search 12.10 catalyst download, download and install. After install check "control panel->device manage->display" and make sure the hardware shows up.

search CGMiner 10.5 on google, find ckvoilas' directories and get 10.5 OS version you have.

Should have example.conf in the download directory, remove the gpu-engine and gpu-fan and gpu-powertune settings, change intensity to "d" and if windows remove the kernel path setting. should be left with three gpu temp settings the gpu intensity setting and a few other defaults. Also input pool info to connect cgminer properly.

run CGMiner, should popup and start automatically, watch the temp for the next few mins, make sure the gpu does not gain temp very fast >30C in <2s without stopping. If so hit "q" instantly and cgminer will stop. If not you're good and mining.
