Is the hacker really Mircea Popescu? Is this already verified? Was it also him who wrote the letter that a hard fork will mean Ethereum Foundation is stealing his "transferred" ethers?

I think this is just a made up story even some are speculating satoshi being real hacker. But i think both are wrong, may be some elite and huge hacker group are behind this.

Can the DAO attacker's lawyer team stop the hard fork/soft fork from happening? If the majority of the community decide to pursue a hard fork, who would the lawyer to after?

Why should he? Much better to allow the HF to continue and thus for ETH to decline to 0, while he is shorting it all the way down.

while everyone is looking to DAO's funds he could be shorting ETH and spreeding the news. just by doing that he could be rich right now.

and later his lawyers would bring more money by suing vitalik.
