The Bitcoin network protocol was designed to be extremely flexible. It can be used to create timed transactions, escrow transactions, multi-signature transactions, etc. The current features of the client only hint at what will be possible in the future.

I'm in the UK and it seems to have been down the last six hours or so. I suppose they're just being a bit cautious until the hard-fork stuff blows over.

If I've said anything amusing and/or informative and you're feeling generous:

Forgot to update that I emailed support and they answered within the hour and explained to me that they where waiting and reindexing their client. That was around 11nish pm Panama time.

So I go online today, at 7 am Panamatime and everything is working and the funds I had send at the moment of the crash showed up on the btcjam website and their site is fully functional.

I have to say that I am very pleased with btcjam service.
