There will be crises much bigger than this one.

If we panic over something as minor as this, we don't deserve the gift that Satoshi gave us.

Frankly, I almost view this whole thing as a positive event.  It's good to see how a serious problem was discovered and dealt with quickly,  and with relatively small fallout.

yea, I just bought in @ $50 yesterday but it was only a tiny bit. It's fun to watch especially on IRC and I have faith that with whatever negative publicity comes, it will attract new buyers at the low rate which will eventually drive prices up. In the past 30 minutes I've seen the trade ticker go from ~38 to ~45. Great stuff.

Can we plan for something like this to happen again during the Bitcoin Conference?

We could watch all the devs in action while everyone freaks out, and all head to the bar and buy each other drinks afterward!

I LOBE YOU ALL. AND I LOBE BITCOIN.

Agreed. Reading the IRC was very interesting. The course of action was agreed upon quickly, with consensus sought from the people most knowledgeable about the problem and possible solutions before any action was taken.

There will likely be short-term fallout, in the form of giving skeptics reason to continue to be skeptics for longer, but to me, this is actually long-term positive in that it shows how quickly and effectively core issues can be dealt with when the need is truly there. This has shown how individual incentives line up for the good of the whole network.

This is effectively a fire drill for how to deal with an attack, and this drill was handled quite well.

Bitcoin is the first monetary system to credibly offer perfect information to all economic participants.

Seriously.  Just yesterday, I had to go off to the bank to send some money to America.  I had to:

1. Ask to leave work early.
2. Miss out on rehearsing my students for a stage production.
3. Rush to the bank and pull #.
4. Wait for 30 minutes.
5. Go to the counter, tell the lady I wanted to send MoneyGram.
6. I had to fill out a paper with my address and personal information.
7. She filled out a piece of paper, entered information into a computer - I waited 15 minutes at the counter while she was doing it.
8. She filled out another piece of paper which I had to sign.
9. And another.
10. She said "Ok.  You can go sit down now."
11. I waited for 30 minutes.
12. She handed my the confirmation number.
13. Later that evening, I emailed my friend giving her the confirmation number.
14. She has to get a ride to the location.
15. She gets the money.

And, two days prior, I had rushed off to the bank, waited 30 minutes, only to be told "I'm sorry, it's too late for MoneyGram transactions.  Maybe next time you can come earlier."  I was ~4 minutes past the deadline, from waiting for 30 minutes.

The whole process pissed me off to no end... and made me realize something about myself.  You know how they say time is money?  I had somewhere I needed to be.  I have things I need to do.  Don't waste my time.  You can take my money, but don't fuck with my time.

With BitCoin... none of that.

This is really interesting. I was reading just the other day about the billions of dollars that flow out of the US to other countries, and it costs like 10% to send. Bitcoin would be a perfect solution.

Just like how cell phones have become available in the poorest places on Earth. It is much cheaper to set up a cell phone tower than to bring a phone lines...

Im 70% sure Bitcoin will suceede and be valued 10,000+ each coin. Just look at all the uses and reasons people would want Bitcoins and you will see the importance of them. The only thing that could absolutely ruin Bitcoin now and in the future is a major software bug.

Luck indicates that our concious decisions to take a chance on an unproven technology did not play a role.

There are plenty of people who have heard of Bitcoin that have dismissed it and missed out on this "luck".

First seastead company actually selling sea homes: Ocean Builders https://ocean.builders  Of course we accept bitcoin.
