scene wants to climb under the sheets with the Bitcoin competitors? I hope this is a joke.. right? I thought after the whole DAO hack, they would have steered clear of any risky endeavours like this. So

You missed out another joke, quoted above. Garzik is not a Core dev, and barely ever contributed when he was attempting to become a Core dev.
