Theymos made it harder to add animated gifs when he changed how they were stored a while back, I think Phin said he had to resize it himself in order to get it to work.

Avatars that are too large (more than 120px wide or 80px high) are automatically resized, and lose their animation in the process. If you want to keep the animation, you'll have to resize it yourself before uploading it, or else find a smaller image to use.
