I'm not trying to ruffle anyones feathers here, but theres other places that talk about bitcoin other than bitcoin.org. I think it's disingenuous to say rumors, bullshit and trickery don't play a roll in a free market.
The network tries to produce one block per 10 minutes. It does this by automatically adjusting how difficult it is to produce blocks.

It's currency speculation, it happens every day all over the world.  Bitcoin is no different.
