others go for  a few  6 card  rigs  that pushes the limits  that can be okay and work out.  but at 59 years old I just say  fuck it my way at least feels a bit easier.

LOL I totally hear you there.  The rig I build on Windows 7 stole about 30 hours of my time to get it to recognize all the cards and to hash.  Of course I ran a Windows update and it was all over but the memories.  It would only recognize 2 of the 5 cards and sometimes wouldn't boot up at all.  Eventually gave up and went with Ubuntu and that took me another 30 hours or so to get that going right and knock on wood that system is running stable now.  Not optimal, but at least it is hashing away.

windows usually has issues after 3 or for cards.  Just by disabling HD audio controller under system devices in Device Manager should fix that problem.
I'm kind of forced to use Windows so I have to figure a lot of that crap out as I have very poor vision.

I realize everyone want to mine ETH with this card but I was hoping that in the shake out of this card that  you could test Decred, Cryptonight, Skein, and Quark as well as I am thinking more long term use for these cards and just trying to think of other algo's to mine later on?

Thanks for the tip.  I always left them all active and never would've thought of that.  Next system I'll give that a shot!

I am not mining DCR at the moment, but when I did a standard benchmark test with NiceHash v.1.6.0 it was showing 1100.800 MH/s DCR for 1 Sapphire 480 8 GB.

EDIT: decided to try Claymore's dual mining just for the sake of it, 25.86 MH/s ETH and 387 MH/s DCR. 28.6 MH in ETH only mode. Above NH figure of 1.1 GH/s is in DCR only mode I am guessing. Going back to ETH only mode. Note this is all done in stock setting because of lack of optimized utility software.

I get 26.9 eth and 550 drc with DCR near $2 is more profitable to mine both

Finished building my first wooden frame, it was too narrow to place 6 GPUs. Running 5 480 8 GB on a H81 Pro BTC MB, Win 10 pro, 8 GB RAM and Celeron G1840. Running at stock 2000 memory clock to see how stable it is for last few hours. 123.22 MH/s or 24.76 MH/s/GPU at 950 Watts at the wall with EVGA G2 1300. It is 2x nosier than 5 390 rig. At 2300 mem clock I was getting 28.7 MH/s/GPU.

So stock clocks    950 watts/ 123.22 mh

the evga is about 88% or 89%  at 950 watts.

the cpu is low cost  my guess is it is using 45 of its 53 watt max

if you had a i5 4570t  you would be 20 or 25 watts   but that is only a 20 watt savings and one cpu is 45 the is 150 on ebay when you get lucky

I wonder if you had a 4570t if it would boost your hash rate along with save some power

I think I can run a 6500t against a celeron g3900  on identical  mobos

a biostar z170  that could show the value of going cheap cpu against better cpu .

950 watts doing 123.22

I had 3 nanos  at 600 watts  doing 81 mh   no bios mod   and high quality cpu

 so  5 of these cards  are 5 x 250  = 1250 usd

3 nanos are 3 x 500 = 1500 usd

they are not so bad.

So far I'm not impressed with my RX480s.  They run super hot at 88-89C in my office Ambient of 76 where as I run most of my R9 390 way cooler.  They are also a power hog not the 120-150W I was hearing about.  I'm measuring 405-408W for my 2 GPu plus the ASR H81 and Celeron that prob use about 50W so 354-358w are going to the 480.  That's up to 179W per card!!  I'm not saving much electricity  as I can get my MSI and Asus with undervolting and doing 31.3 MH via 1100 clock at 260-270W each.   I have 3 different brands coming next week but these 2 are XFX and they are very picky with OC.  2180 for memory is what gets me 27MH, other setting will either make 1 card unstable or crash the entire system.  2140 and 2180 is what works well for me.  Surprisingly when I ran it at stock memory clock of 2000MHZ, it consume almost the same amount of power so it's a far cry from 150W max.   I hope it will get better with newer drivers.

P.S These reviewers must received different cards then us?  How are theirs able to get memory to 9000MHZ?

Beware power sata connector is no good for over 50W... and 480 if pushed 100% can pull a lot more (70W) (if you mine eth+dcr, etc)

It would be best if you can power USB riser directly from PSU with no crap adapters

Also try checking if any of sata power connector is heating at max load after 5-10min

Unfortunately I don't have enough Molex connectors to connect to each riser, only 2 per EVGA 1300. 1 GPU did melt yellow cable (Molex to SATA) a couple of places but the connector ends are not burned. Actually I didn't see any burn spot on the cable just the cheap plastic ballooned. I connected the riser of that particular GPU to Molex directly from PSU. Rest of the cables are ok and have been running over 12 hours. Pic of the burned cable below.

cryptomining-blog   tutorial allows you to push 28mh/s while keeping stock clocks.  You only need to push the Ram a little, to 2250mhz. As a bonus, he managed it with power target at -15%, saving extra power from the wall.

Alternative is good quality extender with quality power connector (best would be to have 6pin pci-e connection), or USB riser which does not go over SATA power, one yellow wire is a bit on limit for 480
Those cheap chines one I don`t know some are better some are crap, maybe if they use 2x yellow wires + 2 for ground and some good quality connector at the end, but as I sad best would be if they had 6pin pci-e soldered on the riser PCB, I sow some but they are hard to find, if the quality is good they should prolly provide 75W with no problem

cryptomining-blog   tutorial allows you to push 28mh/s while keeping stock clocks.  You only need to push the Ram a little, to 2250mhz. As a bonus, he managed it with power target at -15%, saving extra power from the wall.

yeh thats what im doing also undervoltimg core and mem clocks by 50 power for dual mining is around 170

Every time I try to set memory clock to 9000 MHz (+1000) and hit apply, it goes back to 8800 MHz. Should I just leave it as it is and don't hit apply. I am seeing some power savings at -15%, 27.1 MH/s at 186 watt at the wall. It was 215 watt at the wall before.

For quality risers, splitters or 133 CFM fans, please visit my eBay listings,

I just downloaded the same tool.  I think this will work if you have a single GPU but if you have multiple, it won't work the same.  Testing it on 2 x XFX.  Moving voltage will automatically change the Clock speed, so can't match the exact as the link above shows.  If I just change the clock and let it handle the voltage with a -15% power save, it will crash my system.  RX480 super picky.  I think Hawkfish saw similar issue with 1 card setup vs 5 card as well.

Weird part - I remove Asus GPU Tweaker software and go back to MSI afterburner.  Use my old setting at 2180 for memory, it shows 2250 on the software as well as AMD Wattman but is only pulling 348 Watts for 2 GPU - MB = less than 150W per card while pulling 27MH.  Old setting would pull 408 watts.  I'm not touching it anymore.  RX480 is weird.

Just "Mining" my own business.

here is a set of photos with me trying sapphire trixx on an r9 390

1 r9 390  and the rig pulls 216 watts   the rig drops to 32-34 watts  once I turn the mining off so  182-184 is for mining

I am impressed with sapphire trixx

I am doing a -163mv  undervolt

tiny gpu overclock 1023 vs stock 1015

memory  1000MHz which reads as 4000MHz

fan at 40%

gpu temps are 61c  and vrm = 73c

quiet    pulling 25.9   hash rate

Hi Phil , did you do something in particular to achieve this big undervolt ??
With my R9 290s , I can only go to -100mv with afterburner ..

sapphire trixx  will do -200mv  with the r9 390's

btw that card became unstable at -162  14 hours in, but it is stable at -128mv

watts are 226 vs 216  still good since the rig has about 32 watts  with no mining.

 so 194 watts for 25.9 mh  for a r9 390 is okay.

well I got it to do 25.9  at  184 watts for  14 hours

it now does 25.9 at 193 watts for 2 days

so  27 at 180  could be possible on sapphire trixx

especially if you mod the bios. my numbers above are a non modded bios

my 2 rx 480's come today.
