Ubuntu 12.04, just started with this and not having much success so far.

I was able to get icedtea installed without problems, and when I did the test drive for bitminter.com, that worked for me. I can see the control panel, all is good.

However, when I try to run the actual bitminter.jnlp file, all I get are two processes running, javaws and java. That's it, no client screen, no progress window showing files d/ling, no request to authorize certificates, nada.

Any ideas or advice appreciated.

I also am new to linux, and had same problem. It sounds like you have your java add-ons installed, so when you download the Bitminter client Ubuntu should ask you how to open the file. Click the pull-down menu, and there should be something along the line of open with icedtea. If not go to the software center, do a search for java, and install openJDK. Be sure to see the "more" for details, and check the icedtea option. Install that onto your system, then try to get the Bitminter client again.
