EDITED 3/21
If you would like to contribute to the bounty anonymously, email litecoin51@tormail.org.

Donations:
$500 knowledgeable
$500 anonymous5050
$500 lophie

Total raised:  $1500 of target $4000 needed for attack.  Litecoin value down 33% since this thread started.  Litecoin network hash power down 43%.

-------------------------------------

To encourage a demonstration of the insecurity of the litecoin network and the ridiculousness of its $10mil market cap, I will send $500 worth of bitcoin to whoever shuts down the litecoin network for 4 hours with a 51% attack.  I will escrow.  Please add to this bounty if you would benefit, as $500 is not enough.

My time is valuable, and I lose it every time I have to explain to a friend why they should not invest in litecoin.  They are buying it because they don't know any better and hoping it will go up because bitcoin did, because it is currently "going up", and because its price per unit is lower.

They don't know that litecoin is accepted at <20 merchants and that this has something to do with the value of a cryptocurrency

They don't realize that the litecoin client hasn't been updated since version .62 and that it hardly has any developers

They don't understand that one of litecoin's (tiny) changes to the bitcoin code is a negative contribution that downgrades the network security by making it vulnerable to control by a single botnet or specialized hardware.  Some of them think litecoin is more secure since it didn't have a chain fork.  Unfortunately, the last threatened attack on litecoin was not executed by BitcoinEXpress, who later said he loves litecoin and wanted to help it.

I believe this was something you edited. You sounded much more optimistic about this $500 figure in your initial version. Reeducation on the spot does work, somewhat.

Total raised:  $1500 of target $4000 needed for attack.
Let's see how this $4000 figure turns out.

I seriously doubt you will make enough money in your lifetime for anyone with the necessary hashing power to even consider this.

This is just mad. You don't want an expensive 51% attack with only temporary results. You want a re-org attack, a blockchain fork, or hack a client to remove the requirement for transaction fees and start throwing massive blocks at the network.

LiteCoin is based on a very old version of BitCoin that has a few known problems. These problems can be attacked for less than what a 51% attack would cost.

What is there to be scared of? Just invest in it and you'll be fine.

Coblee modified the client already to reject spam transactions by making the fee mandatory in the client/litecoind.

Pretty much any attack that forks the chain will be corrected within a few hours, as coblee, pooler, and laSeek keep a close eye on it, despite not posting here much.  When the spam attacks started, coblee fixed them within a day or two.  When the previous 51% attack was threatened, he checkpointed the chain.

Anything that is "claimed" but never actually manifests itself into something real that you can view, test, verify is all but bullshit...this OP attempt is just as much a scam as BFL is.

All talk. Come on OP start hooking on the side of the street to make enough to attack litecoin. lol

Why go after a scrypt coin that everyone has a chance to mine? Why not go after the other SHA-256 alts that only a few 'chosen' can horde.

I hope the bounty will increase -- if litecoin remains stable even in the face of a five-digit bounty, then it will say something about the stability of litecoin.
