I'm wondering what bit coin pool should I join?

I like the idea of mining shares...

I'm new as well. I've been using bitminter after running into some connectivity issues to slush.
Slush's pool seemed like a better return than bitminter.

Just my BTC.0002

There is more to pools than the advertised rate. What's important is that the pool is up and the software is solid and you can get help when you need it. A pool that pays you 100%, but is down more than up doesn't help you.

There are a lot of good pools, but the ones I like are:

  • btcguild.com
  • slush
  • ozcoin

Cheers!

I agree, reliability and fees are the biggest things to look for. On average, you will produce the same amount of Bitcoins, no matter where you mine. Even solo! Though solo will take a long time to find a block and with ASIC coming out, it may never happen
Find a pool with lower fees and low downtime.

I just did the same thing.  Gave bitminter a try for a day or two but the returns sucked.  I started out with slush's pool and got familiar with the various tools (cgminer, rpcminer, etc).  Now I'm back at slush's.  I get about 1 stale every 2000 blocks which is way better than what I was getting at bitminter.  Plus the rate im hashing at +100 Mhash/s at slushes than what I was at bitminter.
