I've been looking into this as well.

I found this

http://blockgen.net/setup-your-own-mining-pool/

and

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=848697.0

Seeing if I can figure it out.

There are quite a few well-established pools already available to which you and your friends can point your miners.  For example, I run a pool (bravo-mining.com).  Kano runs a pool (kano.is).  DrHaribo runs a pool (bitminter.com).  mmpool runs a pool (mmpool.org).

How big is your mining group in terms of total hashing power?  Where are you and your group located?

Jonny's Pool - Mine with us and help us grow!  Support a pool that supports Bitcoin, not a hardware manufacturer's pockets!  No SPV cheats.  No empty blocks.

If you want a small pool your better off doing what Johnny says and jumping on a smaller pool like Bravo or myself.  Help the smaller pools grow but you will receive a much larger portion of the block than on a larger pool while helping the smaller established pools grown.
