Fan problems

Hey guys.

I recently bought an computer with 3x HD5870.

And now i've got 2 problems

let me first describe my goal: My goal is to be able to play games on the computer, And mine bitcoins when i don't.
Like a friend of mine has: he's got in GUIMiner -45, so that when he plays games, the miner client won't disturb him that much.

I thought that reaching this goal was going to be easy, but it's not.

Problem1.
My fans are behaving strange. Sometimes, they just go back from 70% to 50.
this is a problem, because at 50 they get like 90 degrees, which is far too much in my opinion....
I'm using MSI Afterburner, Does anyone here know another (not too difficult) programm i can try that maybe will work? or perhaps a fix?

Problem2.
I can't combine gaming with bitcoins mining.
The thing is, that the cards won't mine in GUIminer, f45, not even in -f20. Only in f1 they mine good.
(with not mining i mean 1-8mhz/s instead of the 430 i normally have)
I'm having the same problem with phoenix.

I thought i could fix this by not using the cards at all, and just use the 2500k to play some humble games.
but that doesn;t seem to work either, because then the fans swith back to 50%, and are locked that way in MSI Afterburner.

weird. and wrong.
majority of MSI AB alternatives are inferior, compared sadly :/
what software do you use on you PC ? i mean - pre-installed OS/Appz or done it by yourself after purchase ? what AB version you use ? stable or beta[and which build  if] ?
sounds like missconfigured/corruped OS/Driver/CL SDK or maybe crippled GPU with BIOS tweaks to mask it.
try clean install[with re-partitioning/mbr flush].

Windows 7 x64, done by myself. actually exept Winrar, Afterburner none other applications installed.

3 crippled GPU's? i think that would be almost too much bad luck to be possible


Tommorrow i am going to try how they'll work in crossfire, and maybe reinstall OS yea.

any other ideas what could be wrong?

try reduce aggressiveness to something like "-f60" or even above. sometime GPU or CPU stress, make MSI AB react to temp/rpm change slow/erratically.
what can be "wrong" ? [from my two-decades fighting with computers/networks experience]virtually ANYTHING. thats why we're can just guess w/o further input.
and about "out of luck" situations with pre-"EoL"/"Out of stock"-status equipment, im couldn't be SO optimistic, but you [probably]right. anway, keep fingers crossed, ALWAYS, cuz nothing is absoliytely reliable and anything you build will fail, sooner or later - count on it, predict/expect it and be ready 4 it&consequences.

maybe some bogus PowerPlay[its power saving "feature"/tech in AMD GPU's. one of them]artefact ?
does its happen with DIFFERENT versions of GPU drivers["Catalyst"] ?

What CPU do you have? because with the stupid windows bug where each GPU takes up a full core i've experienced weird behavior like that where my hashrate wouldn't remain stable at all and go up and down all the time and the fan in the same manner because it thought the load was going down...

Do you close afterburner? If so don't do that.

I had issues where afterburner would reset the fan to 50% each time I changed resolution or card affinity.

Using the static user option works if I remember to set this each time.

Just tested, swapping monitor does the same to me, just remember to set the fan each time you change anything.

Really strange.. guess those drivers are not meant to be used for folding/mining

is there maybe another programm out there that doesn't swap back to 50%? because it's pretty anoying

And god bless that all works fine, no unstable hash rate or full usage of my cpu

This happens when I use Trixx or the Catalyst Suite as well, I think it is a driver issue.

Windows will automatically assume you are not using the card whenever nothing is plugged in. Linux does not do this.

oh and this is why you can buy the dummy plugs?
i've got them somewhere i think, does plugging them in would stop the problem?

From what I hear, dummy plugs should prevent the machine from realizing nothing is actually attached, so yes.

Let me know if it fixes your problem, I don't have any myself.
