I'm trying to transfer money to my BTC-E account from my bank (checking) account or debit card.

Any ideas on how to do this without extremely high fees? I can't do a wire transfer due to the extreme fees put in place by my bank.

Not quite sure how that's relevant, but I'm just investing a couple hundred bucks.

Have you decided against using Coinbase.com?  I've used their bank transfers with good success.

Having just helped a rather technically illiterate friend purchase an above average amount of Bitcoins I can suggest that it's not straightforward and certainly would strain the patience of the average person, IMO. Obviously the people supporting Bitcoin are working hard to make it easier to do so but this is clearly a major stumbling block for average consumers and to the success of Bitcoin. In addition, it took numerous hours to update Bitcoin-QT on this persons computer whereas the average person has an attention span of a few minutes these days. I'm not complaining, in the sense that, if it was easy, it would be too late. However, these are obstacles to broader adoption, without doubt.

There's a reason bitcoins exchange for a lower rate on BTC-e than elsewhere, and that difference is partly because of the difficulty in transferring funds there.

AurumXChange will let you transfer VouchX USD vouchers as well as a few other redeemable codes (including Mt. Gox USD codes) into BTC-e vouchers.

I was avoiding using Coinbase due to the large price differential, but it looks like their prices have evened out with MTGOX.

Do they charge anything to transfer funds into your account? For trades? To withdraw bitcoins?

Careful, BTC-E has 0.01 BTC fee to withdraw BTC. That is expensive!
