So while looking for quieter fans for my soon to be arriving S7-LN, I came across fan filters and wondered if they would be a benefit or a hindrance to the Antminer? Obviously it would stop the dust and I'm guessing it would restrict airflow slightly but would it muffle the sound aswell?

Does anyone use fan filters on miners? If so what models of miner and what are the affects?

I have never heard of this being an issue.  Every few months I would just take a can of air and spray them out real quick.  takes all of a minute per machine and isn't a huge deal by any means.  I wouldn't spend the money on dust filters that may help with a little dust, but could potential heat your machine up.

Yea I already use the compressed air routine for cleaning. Just wondered if anyone had used them Smiley

I suggest that you wait and listen to the S7-LN before you buy replacement fans. The device is very quiet stock and will likely surprise you.

I am going to wait don't worry  Wink

Just got bored and thought I'd do some preliminary research and curiosity got the better of me so thought I'd ask people.

I try to watch the front fan's you can kinda tell when miners start to add up on dust.   I use a air compressor so lot's of air and blow out miners.   I also take the fan's off if not under warranty and clean them with a paper towel (some miners taking fans off void's warranty).  Cheap but does a good job of wiping them down.

I also try to clean them out when selling to.   You have MUCH happier customer's if they receive them looking nice.   Just sold a S7 and did deep clean taking a little longer trying to make it look as new as possible.  So worked out good in the end.

But specifically with summer right now I don't use any dust filters I would rather clean them, then possibly block air.  And I realize some are going to be fine to use as filters.  All miner's should make sure to watch for dust though as every once in a while we see pretty horrible miners on here from dust.

you should leave it alone on the 20% fan setting it is really quiet.

dust filters won't work  at those fan speeds.

but if you really think it is too loud maybe this fan and only this one

 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835220056

would do what you need. and

I do use dust filters on my s-9s but the fans are smoking

I think that dust filter will reduce fan efficiency and increase temperature in the miner.
After all, after running miners for 2+ years, never had significant problems with dust since the fans are running high rpm.
Not using dust filter would be better for the miners in the long run.

It depends on dust amounts in the place you mine.

That's exactly why reason I'm asking, my (soon to arrive) miner will be under a desk so it will be in a high dust area so wondered if the filter would be of benefit. But it all depends on the scale of the downsides (heat, fan stress etc).

Compressed air is what I am going to use with mine since I like the 20% fan setting.

Already got a "super" can of it, I suppose seeing as they are only 20% they will be sucking in air slower so it wont build up as fast  Roll Eyes

Well thanks for the replies as always guys  Smiley

I've used these, they will add some increased noise (and increase pitch) and lower the volume (amount) of air but it's slight.  https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00PLHTIYG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1  You'll need to clean them regularly.

I have gone through 2 pieces of this stuff, and it's freaking amazing.

http://www.rona.ca/en/furnace-filter-02095249--1

Makes a beautiful intake filter, I use a piece on the front of my S9 (One of the ones with a whiny fan) and it keeps the noise down substantially.

Always hashing for the community. Oh, and dollars.

I prefer to put the dust filters on the fans I feed air into my mining area with - a 20x20 furnace-type filter makes a VERY good match with common box-type fans.

You don't really need dust filters, bring out the fans once a month, wipe them clean with a rag and put them back. Your S7 will last longer and you will feel less heat.

I was meant to update this but as usual I forgot. I bought a cheap 120mm filter and took the filter element out and placed it over the intake fan. The suction held it in place. Within 10mins the temps had risen 10degrees although they settled at around 65-66c with the heat we've had the last few days (30c) I'm not happy leaving it on. As you guys have said already, it's not a major issue. I've tried it and it wasn't suitable for me.

And dust will accumulate in the room, which is a bad thing for those of us with allergy issues.
