This will be difficult as bitcoin is not designed to be easily regulated by government.

However, if all miners agree to help, that will be a different story. They can choose to reject transactions from addresses not registered with an identity. I heard MIT/some institutions is proposing this.

They could put restrictions in with our banks to make it harder to buy bitcoin though.  Regulation in my opinion is a real threat.  Some sellers on local bitcoins already as it is don't like people mentioning anything to do with bitcoins.  And Germany has recently introduced regulations preventing buying bitcoin.  Now would be s good time to follow the uks footsteps and abandon the eu,  as it is they get to impose too much control.

Bitcoins is much better as uncontrollable, but if there is any problem of insecurity that the criminals will make illegal use of it then I think the governments should have to do something for that as peace of the world is the most important thing of all.

Guys, there is one thing you don't understand: The governments of this world are NOT here to bring us peace and to help us have a better life at all. They are here to implement their ideas, their plans. Plans that have been written for hundreds of years, and today can finally see their success. The governments are here to spy on us, to have every single move of us. Bitcoin is something that bothers them, because here we finally aren't in their eyes anymore. This is the reason they want to control the Bitcoin now too, NOT terrorism. Terrorism will be out there whatever we try. They NEED to have us under their control. Wake up guys, we are living a globalisation plan. And you can see this on the news happening day after day.

EU seeks tighter control over cryptocurrency
https://www.rt.com/business/350634-ec-stronger-controls-bitcoin/

Good luck !!

Governments / Banks don't like it when the people have control, they may want to ask banks to monitor accounts but this doesn't stop cryptocurrencies it will merely have people devise more ways for people to get cryptocurrencies to ------> cold hard cash!

Some countries are even trying to control cash (limits on how much you can spend in cash, how much you're allowed to carry and so on). I've heard that there were some ideas to totally remove cash and make all transactions online (allowing a total control on each transaction).

I can believe that! I'm sure when I was visiting Italy when I was young that you were only allowed a set amount of cash on you or you got questioned to why you had over a certain amount.

It sounds strange but I'm looking forward to seeing how governments plan to 'control' Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies because it's control like that which brings bright minds out of the woodwork and has them bring amazing new concepts to the table

People's Bitcoins are only safe when they haven't left the realm of Internet and virtual reality Grin Upon trying to cash them out you can and will be spied on by the government, banks, exchanges and whatever else agency that has the authority to do so. I think everyone knows that the only way of exchanging Bitcoin while keeping a somewhat undamaged privacy is conducting a peer-to-peer trade where you will compromise only your face but still your government won't know what you have been doing with these Bitcoins of yours.

So let them do what they need to, to protect you and your family. The fine line between freedom and a police state, is not clearly defined. ^hmmmmm^

They can't control bitcoin. Nobody can. (except than the devs) It is not designed to be controlled by somebody or some government. In fact, it is designed to not to be controlled. So yeah, good luck with that.

Well if they trap and arrest everyone trying to make bitcoin transactions (traping people on localbitcoins or whose bank account is linked to a big exchange) people will stop using it very quickly.

This is the reason they want to control the Bitcoin now too, NOT terrorism. Terrorism will be out there whatever we try. They NEED to have us under their control. Wake up guys, we are living a globalisation plan. And you can see this on the news happening day after day.

As a matter of fact, terrorism is just a good excuse for them to do what they doing. They are supposed to protect the citizens of their countries, and we expect that from them, because we pay taxes for them to do their job. We do expect that from them, but we don't really get what we expect. Your children can get killed a mall and it can be funded by any other currency in this world too, they don't need Bitcoin to do it. Only a small part of the crimes are being funded by Bitcoin. And this won't change, because even with the highest control they would implement in this world, we will still have criminals and crimes will still take place. This is not an excuse to let them do whatever they want, because this "whatever they want" is actually against us. Their actions look like they are trying to do the best for us, but it's exactly the opposite. You can see that everywhere you look around. Yes, they do listen to some of our problems because they don't want to bring the chaos now. The governors themselves are criminals. We are paying taxes just to be their servants, because they do whatever they want. And we'll see this is becoming true when we will have to pay taxes for water, air and other stuff we shouldn't. We're already on the last few meters before their plans will be completely functional, and that will bring chaos in this world. We've been warned many times by a lot of famous people (e.g. 2pac, Michael Jackson), through their songs and speeches about what a disastrous world we will live in. They were killed for telling the truth. Now we are starting to finally open our eyes wide, and it's almost too late. The whole world is being controlled by just a few thousands of families..

You don't turn against cash when a crime occurs funded by cash do you? We don't ask everyone to record serial numbers, locations of cash etc. As many people know Bitcoin is more traceable than cash.

During the 'height' of some of the biggest drugs gangs in the world they were making more than double the current total market cap of Bitcoin a year!

Every government seeks tighter control over crypto.

The main point of crypto is that... Well they can seek whatever they want but they can't do it =D

EU and eventually all nations will try to control Bitcoin, this is why it's important that Core dev stays in charge because they are the only dev team that is pro privacy and pro decentralization, the rest of dev teams don't care about Bitcoin being a censorship resistant tool, they just want more and cheaper transactions at all costs.

Any nation can tighten the withdraw to fiat or deposit of fiat to bitcoin however controlling and tracing bitcoin transactions is not possible. So yeah tightening may effect purchasing and withdrawing capacity but this can't tighten the everyday bitcoin transactions.

Expected thing to happen, it was just a question of time. Every nation will try to control and to try to put some taxes on bitcoin. Bigger and stronger countries will try to control whole block chain. And don't forget about big companies and multi corporations, banks and rest of elite.
Bitcoin will have problems with this groups, and we will see then how strong bitcoin is. I think we have a chance for success, if bitcoin stay alive in next 10 years it will live forever.

I think the secret of governance is to pander to as many people as possible. There are people that are against bitcoin and believe the lies about it. To please them they have to make these statements,  but how you implement it is what is important. Like KYC laws, it's up to a company to interpret it and make their own terms from it. That might mean the full shebang,  with id,  document scans,  etc or it might just mean a phone number.

Tracing bitcoin transactions is not only possible but it is already happening - there is no reason to think governments or some organizations don't build databases of IP addresses for the transactions being made in the blockchain. Bitcoin is not 100% fungible so the task is not that difficult and the governments can link IP addresses to real people just by asking your ISP.
