As someone who has used both coins for that very purpose I agree.

Why? Here is a list of reasons I think so:

  • Capable of four times as many transactions as Bitcoin in a ten minute period. Frankly if payment processors had adopted Litecoin in the past year current Bitcoin block discussions would be irrelevant (and likely the price of both coins higher). Anyone who has watched these discussions understands the immediate advantage of a network with larger transactional capability.
  • Faster confirmation times. The only people who don't think this is important have never spent a single coin or they have patience that the average person does not possess.
  • The faster block time of litecoin reduces the risk of double spending attacks.
  • Anti-spam.
  • Fast well established network. Current Hashrate is 1,643 GH/s. Since scrypt is memory intensive it is known to be approximately 1000 times slower hardware wise in comparison to SHA256. Fair comparison to the Bitcoin network requires multiplying that hashrate by 1000 (1,643 TH/s). The fact is for most of Litecoins history the hashrate has been relatively high and secure. Those comparing it to the Bitcoin network without considering this 1k factor are either being disingenuous or just ignorant of the facts.
  • Continuous development look here at number of releases in past year: https://github.com/litecoin-project/litecoin/releases
  • Upcoming new features and active development look here for whats happening in 2016:
    https://litecoinassociation.org/data/roadmap.pdf
  • Longevity. Many coins have temporarily eclipsed litecoin as they were marketed for the purpose of increasing the fiat accounts of a small group and emptying the accounts of new users. Unfortunately this has been detrimental to crypto-space in general.
  • Great community.
  • Fully supported by GoCoin a growing merchant payment processor used by thousands of merchants https://www.gocoin.com/ as well as other processors such as coinpayments, Asmoney, Alfacoins and Coinify
  • Liquidity. You can sell thousands and not crash the market. Maintains value. Look at the chart here indicating volume in the last 24 hours relative to other coins. http://cryptocoincharts.info/coins/graphicalComparison In fact volume has remained high since last June while maintaining a stable price.
  • The speed, liquidity and value of Litecoin is useful to traders seeking arbitrage opportunities between exchanges.
  • Soon to be added to coinbase.
  • Upcoming release to include a on-chain adaptive block size scaling solution. This will substantially increase the transactional capacity of Litecoin.
  • Fair release. In a crypto world of premined and ICO releases many appreciate this fact. The code was released well before the Genesis block was mined and everyone knew when it would be going live; therefore, individuals could anticipate and get their miners and software ready.
  • Security.

LTC is a very improved version of Bitcoin. That in itself is a good enough reason for it to exist.

Sorry to tell you guys but litecoin isnt going to be making a comeback anytime soon. While i agree its super fast at transaction speeds there just doesnt seem to be any demand for it. Its literally probably the only well known crypto that ive never bothered investing too much into and unfortunately it looks like i never will Sad. Hopefully lightning network will help with bitcoins transactions.

I totally agree with you that is why they are the second most used crypto currency by merchants and always in contention as one of the top crypto coin not only that they are the most cloned altcoin in the industry ..

Me too, I think litecoin is great! Maybe it's too stable for crypto people and they are use to volatility?  Grin

You hit the nail on the head. feathercoin has the same issue.

Bitcoin would not have the problems it has if people used altcoins instead of just trading them against other coins.

The world needs more merchants willing to sell stuff for Altcoin.  They look at Bitcoins problems and run to fiat rather than try a different coin.  They don't understand, nor want to, nor should they!  You don't need to know how the Federal Reserve works to enjoy spending dollars.  So we need legislation to make people who sell stuff like electricity, food, DIY, clothing etc, to offer more than one payment method?  But why would governments do that if they offer their own payment systems (£,$,€)?

If all the companies in the world that made and sold women's shoes gave 10% discount for using litecoin, it's market cap would double for sure. Wink

Also try Dogecoin. It is faster and fees are cheaper. If I was in charge in Dogecoin foundation I will organize market makers to trade in different popular exchanges in order to create liquidity and then market it as the best coin to use when transferring funds from exchange to exchange. It is fast, and the fees are cheap!

Second most used crypto by merchants? Maybe, but what percentage of merchants accept ltc? Has to be extremely close to zero.  I don't see any reason why that will change.

I do like ltc though  Smiley

I agree that as a functional coin it works as it should but with bitcoin being the gold in the cryptocurrency world i honestly couldn't say that litecoin is the silver,  it got knocked off the podium some time ago. I don't even know which coin is runner up to bitcoin atm.

You mean you don't use it. It's used far more than most coins. If you look at today's volume you'll see its being traded at a substantial level.

http://cryptocoincharts.info/coins/graphicalComparison

Note: you'll have individuals saying this is fake volume. Fake volume is usually associated with a pump. According to these types of statements volume has been faked month after month without a pump. Maybe Litecoin is actually being used to transfer wealth and is useful as such because of stability and security.

It's not merchants that decide this, it's money transfer businesses.
Close to 100% that have a BTC wallet also have an LTC wallet.

That's why LTC did $140,000,000 in volume last 30 days...
So it's probably still #2 because all that ETH activity is speculation.

Anyway, look at monthly volume and only 3 coins matter in the real world (BTC, LTC, ETH).

I would prefer all payments in ltc, both sending and receiving, the real world doesn't provide much of this; Wasn't a great fan of litecoin in the early days, more so now, I'm buying to hold LTC for the first time, instead of simply using it... I had 23 hours of waiting for bitcoin send to well known exchange the other day, with fees.

The litecoin transaction is faster than bitcoin. But that is mainly because not many people are using it.

Yeah your right that its perfectly amaze very fast and lighting speed to send and receive litecoin.. this is the same as other altcoin.. i think it is because they are few users of alt using it.. not many like bitcoin.. so if more people use litecoin i think it will experience of slow..
