Yeah and this is true not only for bitcoin but anything really forex stocks, etc. also when you take this into consideration this is one of the reasons brokers are always pushing their clients to make transactions they earn a commission for transaction.

I will be using LocalBitcoins, if I have 0.5 BTC I can sell up to 85% of that in my own advert then the rest on another person's advert. Is there a way to make a profit this way? Or is 0.5 simply not enough to start with?

i think its amount is good for if you want to start trading and you can start trading with lowest and any amount and and yeah this way is good for make a good profit there is a lot of people are earning money in big amount through trading.

i have started with a much smaller amount, it was lowe than 100,000 satoshi and i never took it for granted because i have had clear plans for my future and i wanted to become better at it.

so i kept trying and even though my volume was low but i tried so hard to treat it the same way as if i had 100 bitcoins instead.

No there's a minimum about 0.0001 satoshi but that amount is so little but it is good at that low amount to try on trade ,to learn ,to earn and have applied skills as you go on step by step adding big amounts .
Small amount to trade becomes bigger when compiled of continous rolling of amount.
Don't be excited to go for big trades ,skill is needed for that , learn and experience first to have a good trade then.

Yeah bitcoin or any other alts It's just need some good amount of fund in be an buyer or seller. Then he need to have certain amount in his bank account as well.

There is no minimum amount to start trading as long as that is what you can only afford to invest and also risk. If you have patience your small amount can get big in a year. And with a small amount it won't be disappointkng if you lose from it because of you are new in trading you will experience many mistakes.

I recommend .25-.5 BTC starting out but trends don't last forever so is fine going in with higher amounts also.
