Human beings are already in its preparation stage to launch the trained astronauts to be sent to mars. This is a preparation for the purpose of making human colonies at Mars. On the other hand some corporations are targeting to mine some rare metals on asteroids.

Bitcoin as a virtual currency can be sent anywhere in the form of waves and frequencies passing through towers, cables or even in air. Bitcoin can be sent to space and it is possible. Maybe in the future when space colony will be established bitcoin is the potential legal tender.

Is it possible? What do you think?

It would be possible but as you said, there are many minerals that could be mined. Probably if i would have a chance to go there, im gonna find some new source of money. And maybe the scene there is like a post apocalyptic era where people is doing everything to revive mankind.

well most likely people will have to use electronic currencies/invisible, you need to travel light when going to space.

I think you have a vivid immagination. There will be houndreds of years before mankind will colonies a different plant, that is if our sociaty live that long before it completle destroys this planet. Untill the alians come and gives us new technologies I don't see in the near future us leaving earth.

While sending bitcoins from other planets may be fun and all, it has a big risk of forking. Signals can take up to 42 minutes to go back and forth between Earth and Mars. Let's assume we have an advanced colony on Mars with miners. The blockchains on the two planets would fork since blocks on Mars and blocks on Earth would be created at the usual 10 minutes, but propagation delays would prevent blocks from Mars from being added to the chain on Earth, and vice versa.

So I don't think Bitcoin would be fit for interplanetary use unless it has an unholy block time that's proportional to the propagation delay (i.e. We would need longer block times if we were to include Jupiter). Other electronic solutions would also suffer from the same issue (e.g. Paypal's database would not be synced fast enough between the two planets, or transactions would be painfully slow). I think the best fit would be actual fiat or gold.

Take note that I'm not imagining any sci-fi stuff. All of these problems would be solved if physics allowed us to use maybe spooky action to get instantaneous communication between planets (e.g. Spooky routers that would instantly transmit data back and forth between Earth and Mars).

You talk about vivid imagination needed to imagine bitcoin in space and then in the very next sentence you expect aliens to come and share their tech with us? Interesting double standard.

And of course bitcoin is perfectly feasible to be legal tender in the future, for everyone, mars colonies as well. It is nothing weird to plan any kind of future solutions (economic as well) long before the actual mission will even start.

You are assuming radio waves. While your concern is still valid, encoding on light waves would put it between 3 and 21 minutes, depending on distance of planets

Maybe Elon Musk must start making a Bitcoin Mars which will be able to communicate or transact via a prescribed gateway and successfully exchanged with the old Bitcoin of Earth! Smiley

The pioneer space colony will have no need for money, when they arrive there. The first thing they need to do, is to find a way to survive in that hostile environment. Who in his right mind, wants to swap earth for a place where no plants will grow in the wild? If they survive there, they will trade goods produced and do research and exploration for the time they are there. ^hmmmm^

haha, you watch too many science fiction movies.

first of all we are so many years away from even going to another planet and being able to stay there, let alone wanting to mine anything (minerals or whatever) there.

and if that day comes, you don't need to pay the astronauts who are on another planet in person to need bitcoin and sending it through space. you pay their family or deposit in their bank account on earth!!

to the moon with bitcoin...

I think by the time we colonise any other planet, even a close one like the moon bitcoin will have expired many years before. Im sure some electronic currency will be used at the time and maybe somehting that is loosley based from bitcoin itself but not bitcoin. This wouldnt even be in our lifetime anyway.

Well before we even get to that stage we'll need to have solved the immediate problem of deep space radiation which is thought to have damaged the hearts of the Apollo astronauts. If it turns out humans can't stand the effects of deep space and weightlessness for very long, even travelling to Mars is not going to be possible.

Nice imagination  Smiley, when Colonies gets established on mars  sending bitcoin to mars may be by Geo stationery satellite ,  Now satellites are sending frequency for the digital media like , televisions , radio, defense etc , probably in future there will advanced technology which transmits data on space to reach till mars Smiley

This was my first thought as well.. There will only be a very limited number of people going to these colonies even in the coming 50-100 years. The people that go there are paid to build the colony and their food and housing will be provided.

Currency will become a thing when the colony is established, when people can't do everything they need and want anymore. When you don't have time to make bread, but you can grow vegetables, you can trade them and in the end you need currencies to trade for rarer stuff and stuff that spoils easily.

I guess as there is communication with those places, even a bank transfer would be viable through sattellite.

One thing is doing few months or one year mission, but colonize different environments like Mars might never happen. The reason is human body is highly specialized to Earth gravity force, and living the whole live at half  of that value is impossible (or even one-third in the Mars example I believe). Which is good because decentralized Bitcoin cannot be used over such large distances where information propagates many minutes or even hours.

You are a funny one. I didnt mention any aliens in my post. I just relate bitcoin as a currency which is feasible when human colony is established outside our planet, earth. It may be far before that happens but remember that bitcoin will last 260 years from now then it could still survive and be used when space exploration is already a reality.

I don't think that people will have colonies on.Mars so soon. There are no conditions for it. But wherever people will live in the near or distant future they will take all their achievements with them, so the Bitcoin too.

It wouldn't really surprise me if Bitcoin were to be used for something like that, it's already a global currency and it already enables people here on earth to send money to each other, no matter how far away they are from each other.

But space colonization isn't something that's going to happen soon, who knows if Bitcoin still exists then?

As far as possibility is concerned, yes it is possible. But I dont think the virtual currency that we may use in space is necessarily bitcoin.

Uuhh I think before mankind will be able to colonize Mars or other planets it will take another few more centuries.
So I don't know if it's makes sense to think about Bitcoin being the overall payment system in that time.
I mean we have no idea if Bitcoin will exist in 5, 10 or 20 years from now on.
