Am thinking of investing into mining ethereum by setting up like 3 GPUs to start with. unlike bitcoin that has so many difficulties this days which no one can afford to mine with little capital.
is ethereum going the way like bitcoin or still profitable to mining within next 9 months?

Well with 3 GPU you can probably ROI in 5-6 months. If that is profitable for you invest, if not don't. But if we don't look at ROI and look at current altcoin market i would hold any new investments for at least a month now. With ETC price being to unstable and ETH price dropped because of ETC its kinda a gamble now which coin is going to survive and what's going to be price of it when it does

It depends on if your electricity price is lower than 0.1 dollar/kWh. If so, it is profitable and you will ROI.

You will ROI eventually but that does not mean that it will be profitable for him....

Why is it too late ? And you recommend him to buy coins now when this shit is happening with ETC and ETH ? Anyway if you have money invest, but even if ethereum fail (both chains) which is highly unlikely there will always be another coin to mine with gpu, and you can just sell them afterwards...

ETH profitability will probably continue to drop - it's profitable right now, but diff keeps climbing and the price has been bouncing around a lot but in a fairly narrow range for a while.

The real question isn't if it is profitable, but will it be profitable ENOUGH to pay off your investment into it - and that is looking VERY iffy unless you have VERY VERY CHEAP electric - and somewhat iffy even then.

The developers have stated they intend to move ETH to a Proof-of-Stake model sometime next year - but increasing difficulty will make it unprofitable before then for a lot of folks (there is a diff increase BUILT IN as the DAG file grows exponentially, over and above what network hashrate does to the actual "difficulty" numbers) - so ETH at best has probably less than a year left of Mining availability, and that mining will make less and less money over time.

"There will always be another coin" isn't a wise investment - there have been very few "new" coins that were ever worth anything, ETH being the only one created in the last 2 YEARS or so.

Only reason I spent anything on ETH mining gear is that I had already planned to buy most of the gear for other usages, am just mining ETH with it short-term to help pay for it.

You noobs are slow but let me try to explain. When ETH goes POS no coin can absorb the hashrate. There will be no other coin to mine for profit. Noobs lose again.

You can eventually pay it off.

But really this late into the game if you build a rig, you will be doing it as a hobby and not so much a investment.  As a hobbyist you can mine eth and many other coins as they come out and they may pay off well in the future.  I think though if you like mining coins and having a small gpu miner rack it can be a fun thing to do, just don't make profit your #1 goal.

ETH could easily still be a POW coin in 9 months,  POS is on the TODO list for ETH im sure that is not something they are that concerned with for now.  It's like when the wife nags you about painting the house and you agree to do it eventually.

If you could sell off those cards for not much less than you paid for them then it would lower your risk, ETH will be turning to POS at some point and price could go lower so its hard to say if you will make a roi but even if ETH turn to POS ETC will quite possible remain minable and you could continue to mine that for a profit. Even now ETC is quite good to mine as its still making a profit but anything could happen with the price and it could be reduced to 0 which would make mining pointless at this point.

Which will not happen for quite some time, at least not in next 5 months that is current average ROI on ETH.... So please....
And everyone forgets about ETC which will not turn POS and is profitable.... In fact its more profitable to mine than ETH right now... You can argue about how long will coin last but mine > exchange dump everything you mined for that day works quite well....

Thanks to all for your reply, i do appreciate your comments.
i think am not late yet as there is gonna be coins to mine even if ethereum goes POS. I believe ETC won't follow eth for POS.

Well you should tell us your price of kWh (one unit)... If it's less than even $0.18, then you can profit. Even if the GPU mining of ethereum becomes useless after few months, I'm pretty sure we'll have some other good choice as well which will be equally profitable.

The hardware which you are going to purchase are looking pretty good. I'd say, go for that specs. ETC has actually promised for not turning to PoS by the way.

Well since you have CPU and CPU cooler listed separate i guess they don't come together... You can maybe try to find some used celeron that will sell with a cooler. And for MB if you plan to have max 4 cards it should be fine but if you plan to expand later better go with board with 6 connectors. And PSU with aliexpress..... hmmm well idk i would't trust them with something like that.

In short term yes. It's more of a patient waiting game right now lol. I guess in 6+ months we have something profitable again. By profitable I guess just above electricity costs like it is now. I wont buy more cards now althoug I could fit two more in my rigs, not worth the risk. Anyway just my two cents. Also I see a lot of people selling 7950's and older cards due to getting a bit dated.
