I'm just looking for a rough figure here.
If I went out and bought a stock $1500 gaming PC with a 7970 video card, how many BTC can I earn mining alone or as part of a pool?
Again, just a rough estimate would be great.

It is a common myth that Bitcoin is ruled by a majority of miners. This is not true. Bitcoin miners "vote" on the ordering of transactions, but that's all they do. They can't vote to change the network rules.

Try plugging your numbers into this: http://www.bitcoinx.com/profit/It's not really worth it if you have to buy an entirely new rig, though LTC might be worth it. Also a 7970 is typically around 680 MHash/s.

2 BTC
My rig with 31 7970s produces roughly around 3 BTC per day... Around 0.22~0.28 BTC per day, per card (depends on pools luck as well, i use Slush)

Around 0.22~0.28 BTC per day, per card 6.6 BTC pm on one 7970? I doubt it. More like 0.06 BTC per day, per card. Did you not measure it since reward halving and difficulty went up?

Hmm so around $150/mo at today's prices. How long do you think it would take to make back the $1500 for the rig, accounting for the difficulty increase?

GPUs are on their way out, unless you want to game or mine LiteCoin in the near future, don't spend too much on a GPU system.
For a cheap investment I recommend Ati 5830s they only cost £60/$90 and can hash 260-300MH/s 0.8-1BTC depending on setup/difficulty.

I get around 630 mhs with my 7970. Installed the Artic air cooler to make it run much cooler, the XFX cooler is not very good.

Not sure about you guys but I only get 0.06 a day at 600MH/s (I can actually reach 800 MH/s by overvolting like crazy), probably less now that the difficulty is 6.8 million. In other words, it is definitely not worth it if you plan to build a $1500 rig just to mine. If you intend on buying a 7970 for gaming and mining on the side you can make around 130 bucks a month mining litecoin.

I am getting between 0.005 and 0.01 a day currently with about 650 - 700 mh/s (decent overclocking).
The difficulty is changing so fast now who knows.
