What does the rekcahxfb giveaway say about our community

So it seems the hacker rekcahxfb is offering to give away 1000BTC on reddit.

These funds have been stolen from individuals in the bitcoin community and not some faceless mega corp yet so far nearly 6000 people are more than happy to try their luck hoping to win the stolen cash.

From my point of view all those that signed up for it are just as bad as the scammers and it doesn't reflect well on the bitcoin community which is often viewed as a criminal entity by outside world at the best of times.

I also wonder what would be the legal ramifications for the person who wins it, I doubt they used a proxy so can be identified by I.P address, I dont think the police would be very understanding towards the person knowingly accepting $600k of stolen money.

As for his username, I've read that the funds had no relation whatsoever to the Bitfinex theft, not sure if someone uncovered something else.

This "giveaway" also shows that many people would be eager to return the funds if they were indeed stolen from Bitfinex.

I remember seeing that post the day after the hack.
It was growing at an alarming rate with 3 post per second at times.
The moderators had to shut it down because it was causing chaos with the latency on the board.
But they say it was because it was that user that caused them to lock it up. 
Who really knows what happened really.

it was clearly bullshit but anyone who thinks this forum is filled with people who actually care about what bitcoin stands for is fooling themselves. most are out for themselves and they like to hide behind libertarian ideas and the 'free market' to give full reign to their assholedom and disdain for others.

This isn't really true. There was only speculative proof that these coins are stolen. They aren't tied to the Bitfinex incident and may be linked to TF (still doesn't make them stolen) or I've missed something.

OP was hacked by someone else who edited the original post and asked for Bitcoin in order to participate in this giveaway. There seem to be a fair sum of people that were gullible enough to send them Bitcoin. In any case, it was also being spammed by new accounts and thus had to be locked (will remain locked until OP is able to sign another message).

I think it is far more... no, FAR more likely that he just collected a lot of information about his next victims than information about giving away 1000 BTC.  You do all realize that he's not going to give out 1000BTC? At least I think not. You need only ask why. Why would someone give away over half a million USD on a whim?

Of course they would.  We already know this forum is a turbocharged electromagnet for scammers of all different stripes, and many who aren't scammers wouldn't think twice about getting some of these funds.   This shouldn't be a shocker to any of us here, and I am going to reserve my inflammed moral outrage quota for something else.

I think it is a bit of a stretch to say that the masses were trying their luck to receive stolen coins.

I originally found the bitcointalk thread in question because I was closely following bitfinex's PR guy's reddit posts which responded to a question about the giveaway, to which the PR guy responded that the coins in question were not from the bitfinex hack, but that they are monitoring the situation. The comment that the PR guy responded to had a link to the reddit thread which had a link to the bitcointalk thread. When I looked at the first page of the giveaway, I saw several posts confirming that the signed message did in fact verify, and that the signing address did in fact contain 1,000BTC, so I decided to post my address. After I posted my address, I noticed a post about the OP of that thread possibly being TF, so I went back to the first page to look at the transaction history of the address, then I went back to the last page of the giveaway thread that is now 2-3 pages ahead of the post about TF. --- tl;dr - it was confirmed that the coins did not belong to bitfinex, and claims that the coins belonged to TF would get very quickly buried.

I think, that after people started sending BTC to the address that TF posted after his account didn't get hacked shows how greedy people are around here and how much people like to gamble.

It appears that one of the forum's moderators is willing to outright lie in order to have an excuse to keep a few hundred dollars that he exchanged for nothing to receive.

Interestingly, it looks like the OP of that thread was edited to reflect a specific formula for selecting the winner of his giveaway. I am not sure who edited the post though:

I think this is just a drama to clear those 1000 coins out of all they have stolen. They may reward their own bitcoin address and may post the proof that they won. However if they really give this coins to one normal users who posted address on reddit than i think he will have heartattack first before he can think what to do next with all those bitcoins.

I don't think this is reality and they will be giving it away like this.

Maybe there are people in that giveaway who got their coins stolen and wants to get it back?
Maybe there are people who wants to take control of the coins and distribute it back to community?
Maybe they will use it for something useful and helpful?

Of course there are people who wants to take it and use it for their personal luxury but lets not assume that EVERYONE who participated there are alike and some might have better intentions then others.

Nobody knows if these 1000 BTC truly originate from the Bitfinex hack - I doubt it. It is even less probable that the individual in question will really send any BTC to anyone. And, even if the 1000 BTC are from the Bitfinex hack and will be really distributed it will be very hard to use them in a secure way, because everybody (including law enforcement) will track them. So entering the giveaway will most likely not generate a positive return.

The community is greedy - it always has been. But people might be entering the giveaway just out of pure curiosity or with the intent to give them back to the rightful owners and just reap the fame.

At least it's entertaining for all of us...

There were highly active forum members, legendary accounts and accounts with positive trust "applying" for the "giveaway". If coins ended up on one of these addresses and were proven to be stolen, they'd certainly be returned. There are also many other knowledgeable people that wouldn't stress in returning them if they were proven to be stolen funds. But yes, I guess for each honest person "applying" there were 2 dishonest accounts (maybe from the same user).

Not sure I understand this part of your post, but that seems a pretty big statement, care to elaborate on this?

Why would this surprise anyone? if anything, I'm surprised by the small amount of people wanting those coins. it's "free money" and we are all greedy. if we weren't, we wouldn't be here in the first place.
