BOTs work with or without you. no panic.
You don't need to keep Mist open all the time!
Take your time and download the full blockchain.
ARKDAO was deployed few days ago, so it is inside one of the last blocks.

So you must really donwload it all in order to see ARKDAO running.
At the moment ehtereum is still a bit uncomfortable at the beginning.
Mist made everything much easier.
With the incoming mobile browsers, it won't be necessary to have the blockchain at home
(but if you want real security, always do your operations at home, acting locally on your personal copy of the blockchain)

You could go looking for a Ethereum Bootstrap somewhere, but I only saw a few Chinese sites and I would personally never trust them.
Just let your client do it's thing, it will probably take you a few days for everything to sync up. Restart the client if it gets stuck and let it try to sync up again.
