I've just been "hobby" mining for a day on a single 7770.  Dug around in the closet and found my old 4850.  Can I slap this in my MB and have them both working?

I don't think the 4850 is worth bothering with tbh, but yes they should work together fine. I've ran a mix of 5870/5970 & 6990s together without issues.

As MiningBuddy said, Yes all cards can mine together (4xxx and newer), and I agree, the few MH/s you can get with the 4xxx card would only be useful in LTC mining...barely

Thought I read some issue with 5/6 series cards and 7 series cards together?  Maybe I'm mistaken.

(Not concerned about hash rate right now, honestly, just diddling around and learning)

There may well be, I'm sorry I only have experience with 5/6 series cards.
Hopefully someone more knowledgeable can chime in.

It's tough to find cards that are compatible. It is an exercise in trial and error much of the time.

I'm running 7950+6950 on linux and cgminer with no problems. I don't know what it is like with Windows.
