Boursy wants to challenge me to a game of  Rock Paper Scissors for 3 BTC, to have a 0 house edge way of doubling his money. To show I'm not cheating, I have hashed my move:

Code:
97bc27bafe82e26f3457d90b61202bdddd5fba3a28db91ac0f7f1963612300d7

Which will be of the form:

rock|randomblindinggarbage
paper|blasdfasdfasdf
scissors|adfasdff

If I can not produce the outcome that lead to the above hash, I will automatically lose.

Rock beats Scissors
Paper beats Rocks
Scissors beats Paper

and if we pick the same, it's a draw. To accept the challenge boursy will need to send 3 BTC to: 1BWQcfmCrfHTDfgQvMiajceYbMWKx8kP3w  and then post his outcome here. I will reveal what my original pick was, and pay boursy 6 BTC if I lose. Return his 3 BTC if we tie. And keep his money if he loses

Check out gamblingsitefinder.com for a decent list/rankings of crypto casinos. Note: I have no affiliation or interest in it, and don't even agree with all the rankings ... but it's the only uncorrupted review site I'm aware of.

(oh just two clarifications, making an another post to avoid editing the OP. The hash was generated with sha256, and boursy's bitcointalk username is zirt )

Actually he just wanted a way to double his bitcoins with the lowest house edge possible. I first told him he could use one of the betting sequences developed by Dooglus or Blockage ( https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=939776.0 ) which would allow him to change a 1% house edge to ~0.7%  for this purpose ... but as it's pretty complex I thought I'd give him the chance to do it for 0 house edge with a friendly game of rock paper scissors.

(But since then, boursy hasn't said anything -- and I'm feeling a little guilty about winning)

Could someone explain to me how the hash provided

in a way that proves that Ryan pre-selected it and can't change it yet Boursy doesn't know it and can't figure it out?  I'm not saying that it doesn't, I'd just like to learn more about the backend technology.  Thanks!

Run sha256(scissors|f75916d142d536313f7d4206cfacfa99dd4a28420ea5e25c7e4517b2d189da8b), or find a sha256 converter online, paste the text and see if the hash matches. You will get the same hash that he originally posted. Anyway, I can't explain how it works (Google might help). Bitcoin runs on the same technology.

Holy shit you guys mustve been bored to come up with this gamble. Nice win ryan

You could have told him to make a ~0.24% house edge dice bet at moneypot. Simple, but still lower.
Anyway, congrats on your win.

To expand on what DarkStar_ said, we need to first make two (very safe) assumptions:

a) sha256 can not be reversed (you can hash things, but you can't unhash them)
b) there's no way to find two things that hash into the same outcome

So what I can do, is pick a result and hash it:

382635c9325bf3273d195ff1b8a44e5b11afd7d97addeb8863ea35feb98c1a07

but this is extremely insecure, because it can be "brute forced". (You can try that yourself, just check all possible outcomes and you'll see what it is). So to prevent it being brute forced, I add some random digits after my result, that makes it impossible to brute force. Now due to assumption a) I know that my opponent can't unhash it and cheat. And due to assumption b) my opponent knows I can't change my pick

Check out gamblingsitefinder.com for a decent list/rankings of crypto casinos. Note: I have no affiliation or interest in it, and don't even agree with all the rankings ... but it's the only uncorrupted review site I'm aware of.

Hi
Indeed I lost. I had only 33% odds to loose but, what do you want... my luck...
Yes I am very sad and affected, that's why I stay away from computer. I don't want to come and complain!
I just wish, still, to thanks Ryan, I am sure if I won he would be glad to pay me. I even wonder if he would not be happier if I won than if he won ah ah ah. I am also 100% CERTAIN he did not cheat in any way.

And yes I was the one who asked the best way to either double up or loose the 3 BTC...

Also please note Ryan had no interest at all doing this, as there was no edge at all.

I will be offline for a few weeks time to keep cool, but don't worry, beside money, my life is very good.

Actually you can slowly double your money using that 3 btc. 3 btc is not small amount though and you can really use it to earn some coin out there rather than busted in one all in. Hope you wont try to recover some of your loss by bet 6 btc again on this kind of games

@rhavar congrats anyway to your big winning Grin

In response to using the sha256 hash, it would be easier in future for you to use gambit.com for that or to sign a message from the address the funds were sent to (makes it easier to explain to other users also). Brute forcing can actually work in some cases though would take a lot of effort to do.

@jackg - It would take more than 100 years probably to brute force Ryan's hash, even knowing that it either starts with paper, rock, or scissors. I personally think using encryption is the way to go in this case, and they also don't have to trust a third party. I suppose signing a message and giving a signature would work as well.
