What are the statistics on this? What is the best thing to do?

For example, at what price the NXT ICO was selling at? NXT has been on a perpetual downtrend since Poloniex added it. At what rate was NXT trading before Poloniex in smaller exchanges?

But ETH ICO was a great investment, same for Synereo and others.

Im not sure yet if its cheaper to wait for a exchange or buy at the ICO.

there is no rule. For example:
Lisk ICO price was 18000 satoshi with BTC price around 420USD, just after launch it was between 60-120k satoshi and lowest Lisk price was around 36000 satoshi few weeks ago.
Waves had huge hype and it's price after launch was only about 20-30% higher than ICO and after some time even dropped under ico price

It really does vary from coin to coin, after the VOX ICO for example when it hit Bittrex the price dropped and continued to do so, the price now is a shadow of the ICO price, but then.

On the other hand you can have a successful ICO where the price is stable and does increase, it is a risk buying at the ICO price but sometimes this risk does pay off.

I agree, it depends on how much bonus and bounties allocated the ICO gave on its ICO period. If the give a lot, then it is better  to buy it on exchange for the dumping of these free coins.  But if it has not allocated anything then most probably it is better to have it iin ICO.  Because of the fact that this investor will never get out at losing end.

that's indeed sometimes bounty give a bad effect to the coin,if the bounty were too much, but for example if the signature campaign bounty or anything else were paid with bitcoin directly as long it's not with the current coin it should be fine and no dump will gonna be happening
