it would be interesting to datamine the blockchain and see if there are any wallets with large sums sent to them, but have not had any activity in more then 60/90/180/365 days.

see how many "dead" BTC are floating around out there

I lost a wallet with about 15k BTC in it, mined last year. Formatted HDD.

Don't mind though (or even feel bad) because there was no indication whatsoever of bitcoin taking off so fast.
I only mined for the novelty factor just as people are now doing with namecoin. Bitcoins were literally worth nothing back then, or at most, had similar "funny money" factor comparable to zimbabwean dollars.

Only got relatively re-interested once I heard the price was up to 10 cents, and started mining again.

back in the early 80's when gold crashed last time, I sold off $10,000 in shares of a gold mutual fund.
at the time there was no good indication it would go back up anytime soon.

Besides, that long ago people were using thousands of BTC for fun on bitcoin blackjack sites, or even that famous 10k pizza. It was more like a fun game and less of an actual currency.

I had 3 computers at home and was mining with the least powerful one, an Intel Atom I have as home server, and at reduced speed because I did not want it to consume too much energy and slow other server tasks. I was doing it just to collaborate with the project. And when the "GPU revolution" arrived I just stopped mining because the Intel Atom grahpic card did not had opencl and I did not want to keep the other computers on. If only I had known...

I actually gave a friend 50 bitcoins when they where like $2 each, and now its a $1000. I have been giving bitcoins away to get people onboard all the time. It was different back then.

Only if he hasn't really used the hard drive since the reformat. But it could be worth a shot anyway.
