The idiocy of Mark Karpeles managed to hurt Bitcoin really badly in 2011. His inability to secure his own system costed Bitcoin a crash that took months to recover from.

Now the piss poor coding of his site shows every time there is a MILD run and volume.

Bitcoin Volume is growing exponentially by bits and bounds. Institutional customers getting interested in some real trading. New people pooring money into the ecosystem every week.

What is going to happen to this awful code in a few weeks/months when the volume quadrupled or tripled? This is the heart of Bitcoin (like it or not) and things don't look good right now.

Mark Karpeles is a hack, we all know that. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

Discuss! Smiley

I wonder how the market will change. Will people switch over to other exchanges now that MtGox failed on them? Would be great to see this kind of 'decentralization' happening when people spread out to multiple exchanges again.

There is nothing wrong with expecting and demanding quality from the top exchange. They set the bar for the entire community and for the media. This thread shouldn't even exist because it shouldn't be a problem.

yea, whats the use of even having the btc value at the top of their site when its not even correct?  are we just supposed to guess how much coins are worth?   something has been smelling fishy with this for a while now.

I agree, but the end result is to vote with your feet or to build a better exchange yourself. Of course, a crashing MtGox will not be favourable to Bitcoin in the short run, but in the long run it will lead to better stuff.

You can see the evolution already taking place with other exchanges front running MtGox nowadays. MtGox's days are already numbered like a Netscape Navigator if they do not improve soon. Indeed, just relax and enjoy the ride.

I recommend Bitstamp. Seems to attract many of the European users.

Drawback might be that they would not be prepared to handle an influx in the amount of users, thus getting to a point where they also become unstable.

It won't stay a problem.  Either Gox will get their shit together or people will finally understand momentum is the only reason people use Gox.  I'm hoping for the latter so we can have a more decentralized exchange environment.

All of these problems with Gox today make me wonder how this fits in to the Coinlab plans.
Are the problems cause because of the changeover process? Will things go fubar when they switch over..or will it be better? I do wish the exchanges were more decentralized too.

Your response is idiotic. Linux is a million times better OS than windows, but will never have market share like windows, why? because windows was the first (commercially viable, etc.). BE THE FIRST, BE ON TOP FOR A LONG WHILE.

Bistamp is a good engine I believe, but GOX will continue to dominate, because it is the Windows of the Bitcoin exchange. They own the market, and Karpeles will bring bitcoin down with him.

All coinlab is going to do, in my understanding, is facilitate americans to move money in and out of GOX. The sucky engine and trading will stay the same.

In fact, this is going to be worse because it will bring MUCH more volume to the trading engine.

It does certainly seem like a coordinated attack with so many things going down at once and the selloff of very large amounts. Someone is laughing at the panic somewhere..and laughing all the way to the bank.

Then he should stop trading, but he systematically refuses to do so. In fact, he claims DDOS every time there is a sell off sparking a huge lag.... The man is an imbecile.

Nevertheless, there is a rapidly growing profit opportunity for people to DDoS MtGox when they want to buy in.

...And other such attacks. We better get used to them (for one, but diversifying in exchanges).

In the interests of fairness, for anyone who might read this later and not know what happened...

The excessive lag on this occasion was caused by a DDOS, and was suffered by other exchanges too.

My statement above still stands, but Mt Gox think they know what is causing the slowness and are working to fix it.

Yeah they just don't give a shit. Mark Karpeles is a failed coder that inherited GOX overnight, and has no fucking clue what to do with it, neither technologically or business wise.

AND this is the biggest Bitcoin exchanger, and the most public face for it. It is really fucking scary.
