What do Litecoins offer over Bitcoin?

First of all, Litecoin uses the Scrypt hashing algorithm instead of the SHA256 hashing algorithm. Scrypt is much more CPU-friendly, which means that you can mine it easily at home without any custom hardware.

Another notable difference between Litecoin and Bitcoin is that the Litecoin network has the capacity to produce four times as many Litcoin units compared to Bitcoin (84 million).

And last but not least, Litecoin is scheduled to produce blocks four times as fast as for Bitcoin (on average every 2.5 minutes), thus allowing potentially for faster confirmation for merchants.  However, I'm not quite sure whether those differences are really enough to set LTC sufficiently "apart" from BTC in order to be successful long-term.  Nevertheless I just started experimenting with LTC for fun. I am mining Litecoin for the heck of it.  I am getting a decent hash rate cpu mining.  If anything, I can convert my LTC to BTC.

cpu mining any coin currently is 1 waste of time 2 waste of energy. Ull be lucky to pull 0.001 or even less of an Litecoin using cpu to mine with. If you using multi cpu ie x4 x6 x8 or i7 etc then still it will be very low amounts you generate.

If you want to see your profitability look up your mining speed on here http://dustcoin.com/mining This will give you an indication on how much coin and $ you are making

Thanks for the link, i was not familiar with the dustcoin link. Would you happen to know of a calculator to determine the hash rate for scrypt mining?
