These codes work on any account. They come in deduction on your next monthly invoice. They can't be used to buy full upfront EC2 reserved instances or to pay for partial upfront (but it's ok for on demand instances), neither to buy domains on Route 53. But they can be used on pretty much anything else. You can't get any troubles redeeming these codes. These codes coming from Hackathon events or trial of AWS MarketPlace products.

You can go to https://console.aws.amazon.com/billing/home#/bill to see an estimate of your next monthly bill and check how they use your credit.
