I just found out about Bitcoin today and I have an NVIDIA GTX 460 to mine with but I'm not wanting to mine 24/7. I've read some beginner pages about what Bitcoin is and how it works but it still confuses me.  I've downloaded this gpu mining software and I've signed up and set up a worker for the BTCguild pool so I'm about to start mining but I have a question first.

If I turn off the GPU mining client while it is generating a block will I loose all Bitcoins that I would have made from that block or will I still get Bitcoins for the amount of time that my GPU spent on the block?

You're certainly not going to make very many coins with that graphics card.  The way most pools work is that however many shares you make per block, you get a portion of the 50BTC that the block awards.  However much work you put in is how much BTC you will earn.

Don't expect much with an nVidia card though :|

Yeah funny that... easy way to win an argument with nVidia fan-persons in nVidia vs ATI/AMD debates....

"How many Mhashes does your card get? CUDA be damned, go OpenCL."

Currently mining with a 6950 and 5850... and liking it. But in response to your question, I found, while reading up on a few pools, that it really depends on how the pool breaks down the payments as well. You may want to see what your given Pools rules are for that sort of thing. Also, its probably a different answer still if you are Solo mining.

I mine with btcoins.lc and I get paid based on my proportion of shares there. However some were mentioning a pay per share method... So there are different ways to break down the 50 BTC amongst different pools.

I'm not really wanting to get into any hardcore mining so I'll be fine if I only make about .05-.10 a day with my GTX 460. According to the Bitcoin hardware page my GPU should be able to make that many Bitcoins a day.

Yeps. Just figure out how much power that is costing you, and depending on your electricity rate... you can see if its cheaper just to buy them.

That's what I'm worried about...it's pretty expensive here in California so it will probably cost more than what I get from mining.

You'll probably make closer to .05 a day, if you're lucky.  4(.05*7) = 1.4 ... 1.4 btc probably will cover the extra power usage, but nothing more.  I guess it's okay if you plan on saving them, but you're better off just buying an ATI HD 5830 and getting a shit-load more.

sold them both on ebay and bought a new 6950 with the money + $25 and now im pulling 340mhs with 80% less noise (its a GB OC 3 fan model)

2x Gigabyte 6950 OC @ 920/450 w/ ati tray tools (1 shader modded) - 760Mhs on ozco.in 0% fee aus pool

I'm not going to sell my graphics card and buy a new one just for mining...I'll just pass on Bitcoin.

You don't need to mine in order to participate in the Bitcoin community, and even with that setup, you'd make a little bit. Don't give up just because you have an nVidia GPU!  Smiley

Maybe I'll try mining for a month and I'll see if I feel that's it's worth it in the end.  Smiley

I have nothing against AMD GPUs. I know that AMD and NVIDIA GPUs both have their strengths and weaknesses. I just don't have the money right now to buy another GPU (even if I sold my GTX 460).
