Today I noticed that several people in different groups of different social networks have posted they are buying antminer s1 and s3,
I wonder ... What is this due to? Any secret? How they will be taking advantage of these old machines?

According to NIST and ECRYPT II, the cryptographic algorithms used in Bitcoin are expected to be strong until at least 2030. (After that, it will not be too difficult to transition to different algorithms.)

They are still good heaters if you need one and maybe they point it to a solo pool as "a lottery ticket" and hope to win 12.5BTC +tx -fee.  Smiley

Winter is coming.

Also the S3's were built like tanks in my mind, that metal case with the reliability I foresee them running in "free" electricity for quiet a while.  They can heat up a room which some tend to do.   I have stopped doing it myself last winter but it is a valid way to try to have a lower heating bill.

Not sure on S1's though how many will really run them this winter.   And those with S3 might be able to jump to S5's that are used for not a ton.  So could be the winter of S5's for those with free electricity.

If you live in a small apartment, the S5 does a lot more noise than the other 2.
But it does make more sense to go with the S5 if you don't mind it.

Agreed. If only bitmain would make a miner that at least resembled the S3 in some shape or form... unfortunately, nothing like it has ever come out of their factories. One can only dream Sad I run my S3's year-round for fun, so I guess I'll be using less heating this year Smiley

S5 fans can be changed iirc, and they make a lot less noise if you want to pay an extra 10 or 20 bucks to replace the fan. I've done it and the noise levels are much more acceptable now, still noticeable but acceptable.

I'm surprised people are still buying S3s.  I had trouble selling mine last year and that was almost 15 months ago. Guess they don't build 'em like they used to Tongue
