This may be an obvious question, but can a new wallet receive bitcoins while it's syncing with the network?

I installed QT yesterday and while it was synchronizing, I sent bitcoins to it. After the synchronization was complete, the bitcoins appeared in the wallet.

For all that matters, you could generate a bitcoin address by hand without ever touching a computer or internet and have someone send money to it.
The synchronization process is basically you reading through all the transactions ever to find out if someone sent you money.
