Two weeks ago I didn't pay any attention to these cryptocurrencies. I only knew of them. Now I find myself buying a machine just for mining. It all started when I stumbled upon the "pictures of your mining rig" thread. I love computers and hardware and naturally the pictures in that thread inspired me. I would be happy to just break even. (That would need be around $200 profit, because the used parts are worth a lot too) For now I am just going to start with one 7950 and mine a mix of litecoins and bitcoins, but mostly litecoins. The last of my parts should arrive next week. I am excited. Anything important I need to know?

I'm also thinking about building a mining rig. What manufacturer's 7950 did you end up buying? I'm looking in to picking up some AMD cards to put in a spare machine for this purpose.

Is it still possible to make any money from mining now ASICs are out? Including cost of power etc.

Yeah, as long as the coin stays above 20-30ish USD depending on you power cost its profitable, no more bf3 my 7970 is producing coins Wink
And if you believe it will hit 200 again you can keep mining no matter what.

You would be wanting to keep your rig on 24hrs a day to quicken reward time. Once the ASCI rigs come out from BFL the difficulty rise opn BTC mining will send a lot of people over to LTC so now is the best time to mine LTC so do it 24hrs.

If BFL ever gets their production going smoothly then you will never see ROI (IMO, based on what I have read) - and the fact that ASICMINER will start producing units as well....but hey dont do it for the profit.

Litecoins *could* still provide an ROI, it just depends on how many people switch over to it (and switch over successfully... I tried 4 litecoin miners and they all crashed for me!)
