Thanks for all the fun running this thread Phil.  It's been really fun unfortunately this spike isn't fun.  I'm really surprised it's spiking up so high.  Goes to show how volatile this is and how little I know.

Well so much is in the hands of bitmaintech I feel they could 3x the hash/diff any time they want to.

Phil, I really appreciate you running this contest for so long. It's been one of favorite ongoing threads on the forum.

That said, I understand that you need a break.

I think we'll all need a break after the next difficulty hits. It looks like it's going to be a monster increase...

Anyway, hats off to you and suchmoon (who originally funded the difficulty speculation game) for such a wonderful time!

I think it might be more accurate to think of it like:

Current S7's get replaced, and then sold to a current S5/SP20 owner (NOT scrapped).

The new S7 owner then sells their S5/SP20 to a current S3 owner. The S5 does NOT get scrapped.

The previous S3 owner might scrap their machine, though they might also sell it to a current S1 owner. The S1 does get scrapped.

This isn't meant to be a precise sequence, but a different way to look at. It might be more accurate to think of the S9 as replacing S3's or even S1's. In that case, the disparity of the S9 to what is actually getting scrapped (e.g. an S3) is huge. This overall sequence obviously includes other vendors gear (e.g. Spondoolies, InoSilicon, Avalon, etc).

Obviously hash rate is being "destroyed" more slowly that it's being "created". So in aggregate it looks like a "new " farm, but isn't actually a new physical installation.

@ alh  yes gear shifts  like you said  an s-3 is worthless to many but not to all especially if they need space heaters.

Many USA buildings are over ac'd during the summer and people use a space heater to keep the office space comfortable.
I am sure s3's do this all over the world.  This type of miner need to be quiet so an s-5 may not help  but an avalon 4 would be okay.

I lived in NYC on and off for 30 + years.  I can think of 30 or forty spots for s-5's and s-7's to mine  where the noise does not matter and power is 'free'.

I am sure many 'off the grid' mines are all over the world.
