Hi, I'm curious to try out mining just for testing purposes as I know it will probably not be profitable but if I can make a buck or 2, even better.
I have a laptop with an i5 and gtx680. Any coins you recommend mining? The simpler the better...
There are several different types of Bitcoin clients. The most secure are full nodes like Bitcoin Core, but full nodes are more resource-heavy, and they must do a lengthy initial syncing process. As a result, lightweight clients with somewhat less security are commonly used.

I only know minergate can be used to mine on pc or laptop i don't know about the rest but actually i don't try to used minergate since i am not into mining these days, and i don't think it is good idea to mine in your laptop since it can maybe harm and can lead to be broke, but who knows we should wait for the other comments to know more, and maybe they can suggest another good info here.

i also recommend minergate as mining GUI on windows. It is fast and easy to use. I used that last year when halving is not been hitted. But i stop already because of the difficulty to find block is double. I suggest to OP that go to the official page of www.minergate.com and download the corresponding application for your laptop specs. There are also guide their and basic trouble shooting. I have recently used MinerGate on 2 newer laptops (both less than a year old). One is an Ultrabook and the other is a standard laptop with bigger 15" screen, but both get at best, 30-40 H/s mining Monero (XMR), which as I understand it, it really the only CPU-minable coin at this point.  So, I would imagine that unless you have a high-end gaming laptop, you will also likely see around 30-40 H/s on XMR. Fair warning, it's probably not even worth it because at that rate, it will probably take about 6 months or more to mine a single unit of XMR.  I ran this for about 2 weeks on each system but recently decided to stop mining on both because I have heard several places it can possibly do damage. Even if there is only 5% chance or less of causing damage, it's not worth it since you will be lucky to earn equivalent of $1-2 in a entire month. I decided to build a GPU rig for mining instead, but I plan on using the CPU on that rig to mine XMR. Laptops just don't seem to be worth the effort, but I do like the minergate software... very easy to use and a great way to learn about mining!

Sad if there is only one cpu coin now worth mining, used to be a few with very advanced combinations of algorithms not possible on a gpu coin or of course asic.   I will look into multiple core ex server rigs for mining a coin and see if that is any more productive vs a normal desktop or laptop setup

A decent GPU on a laptop, are you sure? Usually, the GPU's in laptops are not worth mining with.

I'm having fun hashing ETH/FTC with my MSI-GX70's HD8970M

Not exactly the most efficient setup but not terrible either. Depends on how you define 'worth'.

Don't do it. Sell your laptop and use the money to buy btc. There are more profitable approaches to gaining btc these days, like trading.

If you believe in a particular coin that is easy to mine even with your laptop (bytecoin for example) you can give it a try. But like most of your replies, it is not profitable.

For example: mining xmr with a laptop (15-100 h/s maxim) you'll make around 2-3 units of xmr.

Most (if not all) laptops have cooling problems when under load for a long amount of time, be sure to check your temps!
The hi-temperatures will inevitably damage the hardware so it's not only non-profitable but might even result in hardware loss

I used minergate in my laptop (toshiba) and the laptop got very high temperature.
Now my laptop is broken. I've day using this miner my laptop turned off and I couldn't start it again.
So. .. if You like Your laptop be careful with this or try to put it on a special cooler Base.

even i am using a high end gaming lap and used to mine using minergate for some time, but the problem i faced is that my lap gets over heated and shuts down after a couple of hours of mining.i dont want to ruin my laptop for the sake of getting a few cents when i could purchase the coins,if you want to mine just build a mining rig.

Impossible I'm just telling you so don't waste your time and resources, there is no profit in mining any coin what so ever with a laptop.
I have tried and failed, the only way to mine and earn a profit is to mine with  several powerful GPUs otherwise you just wasting electricity.
