Hey,

imagine yourself in this situation:

- (nearly) free electricity
- 6000$ to play with

what rig would you build and which coin would you mine?

I thought about it and would went with:

15x XFX RX 480 RS (8 GB)
15x Riser (powered)
3x ASRock Z170 Extreme4 (3x PCIe x16, 3x PCIe x1)
3x Intel Celeron G3900, 2x 2.80GHz, boxed
3x G.Skill Aegis DIMM 8GB, DDR4-3000, CL16-18-18-38
3x LEPA MaxBron 1000W ATX 2.3

Boot with Memory Stick, Open build without case.

And my target would be ETH.

I know, could be cheaper (e.g. RAM) but keep usage after mining in mind Smiley

Please share your thoughts, call me stupid, whatever Wink Thanks!

Take that $6,000 and pay off any and all debt that you have.

After that do alot of research into the current rise in the Eth hashrate and difficulty. There is talk and reports of a ETH asic machine being developed/used and if that is true then your GPUs will be obsolete for mining almost overnight.

I would suggest getting 1 mining rig running and then spend the other money on the other rigs. For some reason people think you just plug in GPUs and then make money. There is ALOT more that goes into it than just plug and play GPUs.

Also other things to consider, 15x 480 GPUs will put out alot of heat and draw alot of amps. Does your place have the ability to dissipate an estimated 15x150 = 54 KwH worth of heat per day?

Do you have enough amps to run everything. On 110 volt you will need about a 2250/110/0.8 = 20 Amps of service. (Just for GPUs)

Lots of things to consider. Happy mining.

if you are planning to mine ,then go for XMR,since the difficulty of ETH is increasing and @BTCBusinessConsult  even suggested about a possible ASIC machine to mine ETH,your investment would be a waste.I have seen many suggestion in this forum about the profits they earn mining XMR rather than ETH, do a bit of research and decide .

Hey,

thanks for your suggestions.

I'm mining ETH already with 3x 280x and 1x 390. Also mining XMR with 2x Xeon 2670 (old gen. 1).

I've no debt to pay off so no interest to save. Operating on 230V, each rail can deliver 16A, 3680W per rail. Got 8 rails, so no problem for power.

Would you consider other rig builds for XMR?

Going off of what you just said, and if you are fully OK with losing all of your investment.... I would go ahead and build the farm.

You got the power, you got the cash, you know how to set stuff up. If I were you I would go for it! Good luck!

Edit: For clarity, minimum risk of every invest is always 100% of capital, ie 6k in this case.

I wasn't quite in that situation 3 months back - already had a substantial set of miners running - just before I moved to the Land Of Low Low Cost Electric.
Pretty close though - my Bitcoin and cash holdings at the time were about $8000, and I ended up burning through about $2500 in move expenses + needed deposits on the new place, and managed to sell my old trailer off for a little less than $1000 "as is".

Since then I've put a little less than $4000 into three "used to be ETH now running something else" rigs that have the potential to add one more mining-specific card each, and still have over $2000 in reserve.

I'm no longer legendary just in my own mind!

I can save you a whole set of PSU/MOBO and run an extra GPU (i.e. 8 GPUs per system) WITH a server rack case for that price Wink
