... please secure your location!

In short: we have made a lot of headlines beyond the Bitcoin community in the early days for accepting bitcoins at our bar / restaurant as the first bricks and mortar business anywhere. Three years ago we installed a Bitcoin atm which we took away again as the German central bank was not too happy about that. The atm also made it into the media. Still today people ask for the machine almost every day.

On the other hand for the last years we suffer a series of strange burglaries: the intruders invest a lot of time and force (for example to dismantle a heavy steel door in our basement) and risk jail time and then they literally take nothing with them (not even expensive whiskey or a laptop we use to play music) and do not even bother to search through anything (like shelves and drawers) which any burglar in their right mind would do to find our wallet or money. So they obviously are in search for something specific that would be in plain sight and cannot be hidden anywhere (police is of that opinion too).

Now connect the dots, secure your location in case you have an atm and please tell everybody we don't have one anymore! Wink

Was your btc atm known for having lots of transactions/cash in it? If someone were targeting a btc atm wouldn't they only be able to get the cash and not any bitcoin from it?

Also do you think it's possible that the break ins were/are maybe just to harass your business because the German Central Bank or whoever wasn't happy you accept bitcoin?

Do you have security cameras? Did they show anything peculiar about what the intruders were doing/looking for?

If somebody ask everyday for it, wouldn't be wise to put ATM again in your place?
It would pay itself if there is so much interest in it even if its stolen some time later.

Interesting, I wonder if there's anyone suffering from the same evil, and if we can see a pattern here... Wonder why burglars are so interested in the Bitcoin ATM.

Wondering also why the German central bank wasn't happy with your Bitcoin ATM, did they sent you any communication regarding it?

Imagine that you are looking at something similar to what actual bank atms are facing, which is some mechanism to overlap and record details or hijack the system. Its very interesting and most likely quite effective whatever it is they have sprung on the atm due to the lengths that you say they are going to get inside. Imagine it will become apparent later on and not right away as the data is collected.

not that easy i guess. usually they copy your card, which they still could do with every other atm, so why bother to break in and try with this one? the btc part works with displays or paper printouts, which should be harder to manipulate.
but that doesn't matter as the atm isn't used anymore anyway.

You miss the aspect that bitcoin is not seen as real money for a lot of jurisdictions,so punishment would be less and harder to track down.
It would also work just the same as hijacking a regular atm and that has been shown to be quite easy with parts found on ebay.
As to the matter about it not mattering anymore, this is a open discussion and a potential warning for other service providers. So end of the day the warning and thread do matter to those that frequent bitcoin atms.
