i am looking to buy 1 to 1.5 bitcoin, i am in the UK and have never done this before, i have paypal and can bank transfer, would like to use a middle man if possible. please contact me if you can make this happen

Each block is stacked on top of the previous one. Adding another block to the top makes all lower blocks more difficult to remove: there is more "weight" above each block. A transaction in a block 6 blocks deep (6 confirmations) will be very difficult to remove.

You won't get many sell offers if you plan on using Paypal because of the amount of scammers that operate on that payment system, have you tried https://localbitcoins.com/? That seems to be the place people recommend for anyone in the UK for now, you should be aware though, it's going to get awfully expensive in the coming months for people who want to buy Bitcoins in paper currency.
