Is  it possible? I ask because my rig is running 290 with 15.12 driver... and I suppose that driver will not work on a 470? Or do the latest driver have the same performance now for the r9 290?

You I can mix and match GPU's, the only caveat is that some miners number the GPU's in a different order so make sure your settings match the card.  Use the most current  driver and the 290 will work fine.  If using Claymore's it will still work with the newest driver and if not you can simply copy the dll files for 15.12 into the Claymore folder and it will work fine
