Hi guys, i'm posting to ask you for an advice. After high school i've enrolled in a 6 years degree in medicine and now i'm going to begin my 5th year but i've understood that's not my path. I'm thinking to leave university to do a 2-3 month java course and begin a career in programming. I didnt leave the university before because i missed the courage to do it and to not dissapoint my family, but i now understand that it only makes things worse. I know that you cannot give me an aswer but and advice from someone more experienced than me would help.

It is worth for sure. I highly recommend to keep on with university. Just look back at all the efforts you made to be where are you now: it would be raeally a pity to waste them . Also a medicine degree will allow you better and safer income than a programming course, and nowadays in Italy it's not an aspect to be undervaluated. |

I hold a masters in a paramedical field, so i've come into contact with a lot of doctors in the past. A lot of MD's actually end up in research instead of opening a clinical practice.
A medecine degree does not mean you have to treat ill people all day, it might as well give you access to medical law firms, teaching positions in the higher education field, research oportunitys, administrative positions with the governement, ...
You already invested so many years, why not do the extra 2 and then decide.... In my opinion, it would be a waste of time if you stopped now...

In the field of medicine can make a very good career. This is a serious profession. Do not drop out in any case. You can come in handy in this life. By programming in doing as a hobby in their spare time. Life will show what to be

Two years is nothing in your life. Finish and then start something new. It might still be helpful in the future. If not it will look bad that you quit. |

Java programing definitely isn't. Spend just one week in hospital to experience the difference, not that I've ever dabbled in Java but seen the other bussiness. Okay, has been a children's station where patients like me have been located due to shortages in hospital. The nurses mostly had to care for the little ones, seen cancer cases and ^h^h^h Just short: Furgettabout programing. Your initial path has been the right one. I've seen many doctors who were in it because of the status, or perhaps family forced them. And they're not as good or caring as those who are in it because they truly want to help people and are passionate about it. They dismiss their patients and their concerns because they just want to hurry up to the next patient and just want to go home. Things like that. |

So many people don't do their initial education. However, seldom people reach something satisfying after having toppled over their start into life. So ... proceed, finish, than decide upon another destination. Just remembered "The big short" movie, he's been a PhD in medicine dabbling with stocks afterwards. Somewhat nerdish personality. |

I have a 2 year degree in Programming. I cannot find a job at all. So I don't think a 3 months course could help much.

finish your last year before moving on to another path. your degree in medicine is your fallback, your safety net when the programming jig didn't work out. don't waste that 5 years when you are so near the finish line, it's also a way to appease your parents. you can also do your java course on the side while attending uni, if you're up to multitasking, so you can save time. good luck in whatever you decide to do and i hope it works out for you. |
