Laptop Mining

So I've noticed that my laptop's power maxes out at 120w while mining.

Toshiba Qosmio
2x 4core i7 1.6Ghz (2.5Ghz OC)
4048MB RAM
nVidia GeForce GTS 360M

I get roughly 22-28Mhash/s (yea, I know it's not a lot...).

Running some numbers[]:
28(mhash/s)/120(w) = 0.2333333333333333(mhash/s/w)
60($) for 900(w) = 0.0666666666666667(/$/w)
8($) for 120(w) [if my math's right]

If you were to (lets say use deepbit) for mining with the PPS method:

Okay so excuse my crappy math, but is running my laptop even worth the trouble?

Well, other than worrying about it overheating...I've made plans to drop by my local Chinese Computer Shop.
Thinking of either buying Mining Hardware; or build Liquid Cooling for my laptop.

Hard choice, little money.
I've only got enough for 1 small GFX card or the entire Liquid Cooling system I want to build.

Liquid cooling seems a bit extreme on a lappy to boost such a low hashrate. Youd be better off building a cheap mining rig that can handle the heat. Youd also get a much higher hashrate/$ with a desktop station.

The liquid cooling would mainly be for show (~200$) and would keep my computer bellow 150*F-190*F(yeah, I do a lot of stuff ;P).
I don't think I've ever seen my laptop bellow 110*F.

Within 3 days of having setup my Sapphire 5830, I'm getting just under 300Mh/s with a simple overclock using the Trixx utility, 990/300/1.163V.

5830's are the way to go if you can find one.


But something is definitely better than nothing. :-)


Just think, if you mine 1BTC and you actually hold on to it for awhile, maybe it will be worth quite a bit in the future. Just one. :-)

If bitcoin didn't have a cap (or maybe the cap could be like population control), then I would possibly look into investing in some stocks.
