lets get real for a second... in 10 years the blocksize is going to be SOoooooo huge no simple joe will be able to host a node not without a dedicated EXPensive piece of equipment and a teranet to constantly update then...

the hosting will become centralized just like mining farms that will allow government to pick and pick and pick at these locations and shut them DOUN eventually.... virtual storage with expoential growth rill soon impact the physical worlds of men

another dooms day based on picking a random number out of a hat and then throw in some sprinkles of nonsense to spice up the doomsday
how about use rational numbers that are in context and part of current/known future discussions

Cost of storage per TB is constantly dropping. After 10 years, 100TB storage could be just as cheap as 1TB today.

eh, 2/10 b8 because I replied.

It's not hitting 100TB in 10 years, at most it might be bordering 80-90 Gigabytes. Maybe in something like 100 years it would hit a terabyte.

Also please note that data storage technology is advancing quite rapidly, and now that 1TB hard drives are commonplace, we'll easily see 3-5TB hard drives being $200 at most in 10 years. We might even get that fancy new crystallized data storage device that can hold something like 100TB in 10 years.

Literally not even an argument.

lets think about this... dont you all see it is inevitable... the fabrication of chips and hardware is limited to the world of men will never create nano hardware and even if it woz possible the sha256 will begin to break down and crumble as easy to crack as a 3 letter password...

this cannot continue... as the world of men approach the nano stage the fallacy will be revealed...

it's that size right now.

if you keep a node going all the way through you're gonna be fine. it's the newcomers who are gonna start sweating at a download of that magnitude. bitcoin needs new blood or the node count will continue going down.

Old people, I believe. Because the young certainly change their equipment more frequently, but they always download huge files and record movies, which can fill the largest disk in only a few months.
I currently own 2 computers, one with 1TB HDD, the other with a 2TB HDD, but I don't have 100 Go of free space in any of them.

I used to be a citizen and a taxpayer. Those days are long gone.

But what if it's Bruce Wagner given the OP's propensity for the overuse of ellipses?

Whoo 100tb blockchain. At our current rate of 1mb per block, by the time I die, the size of this blockchain will only be a couple of terrabytes. So honestly, I dunt give a f*ck.

Some people like to stir up shit and spread fud just to feel like they're doing something with their lives, however I can't figure out how they can perform such mental gymnastics to justify what they do half the time. I guess people figure out some way to do it otherwise they wouldn't.

True. i probably can afford to buy a 100TB hosting plan from the signature campaign earnings to host linux ISO files. its going to be cheaper later and innovations are getting good that 100TB hard drives will just be the size of a SDcard Smiley

True, and that's a good point. Having nodes running keeps you up-to-date and makes sure you don't fall behind in massive ways, a challenge that is going to be interesting for a ton of people in the future.

I think there will be more nodes in the future, we'll just have to wait and see whether or not more people get enthusiastic about it.

I can imagine that in 10 years a 100 TB hard disk will not be that expensive anymore.
The problem will be the time you need to download it.
When I compare the speed of my internet from now compared to what it was 5 years ago, it has not changed.
So downloading such a high amount of data will in 10 years still be a problem. Especially if it is p2p.

By that time, many big companies will have invested in Bitcoin all over the world. They currently invest 1000's of dollars in PoS systems to operate, so why would they not invest in a single server with a big hard drive to support the Bitcoin network?

The Blockchain < Pruned version > is much smaller, if you have capacity issues, and second hand hard drives are damn
cheap. ^smile^

I think speed of internet is also constantly getting increased and being cheaper. Even in developing counties like Nepal here i am using almost 3mbps internet for just 20$ per month which is basically 5 times cheaper than what it used to cost for same speed few year ago. Both price for storage device as well as internet cost is dropping in worldwide scenario so i think size and time to download  full bitcoin blockchain will be not a big problem in future too.

By the time the storage will be cheaper, imagine when 2mb of HDD was thousands of dollars last century so the storage will be cheaper but if not individuals then the servers will host 100TB

I remember how happy I was ~19 years ago when I bought myself a very good and big HDD. It had 1.2 GB!
It was my little treasure.

Now I have a couple of TB here and there and I don't even care much of them.
And OP is crying about 100TB in 10 years from now? When technology evolves exponentially?

"SanDisk has recently announced that they have started shipping their 1GB Secure Digital (SD) flash card. Although it has slipped its expected date, it is still the first production 1GB card. Jointly developed with Sharp, it contains a unique “stackable” packaging technology which has both a low-cost and high-yield so that it can be competitively-priced. It is available immediately with a suggested retail price of $499.99"

This is from 2004. So 12 years ago. $500/gb. Do you know what $500 buys now? http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233766&cm_re=512gb_flash_drive-_-20-233-766-_-Product

2 512GB usb sticks. That's 1/1000th of the price in 12 years!

Now think... in 10 years do you really think 100TB will cost much more than $100? And will the blockchain even be that big??
