It won't affect Bitcoin, since this wonderful protocol is meant to be unstopable, whatever happens, and this is what makes it valuable and used.

If internet is being controlled by a centralised body, of course the use of bitcoin will be affected, although there are other ways that bitcoin transmission can be achieved. I remember some guys were working on connecting bitcoin network via shortwave radios. Projects like these will keep bitcoin survive.

The internet isn't being transferred, what is happening is that the ICANN org is being handed over to the UN. They deal with the Domain Name Service system of the internet, of DNS. This is vastly different from the entire internet.

What this means is that, simply, if any website is "blocked" by the UN for x or y reason, you will not be able to type in the Domain Name (bitcointalk.org, reddit.com, 4chan.org, etc.) and get access to it, but you CAN type the direct IP of it and gain access to the website.

It can just be used as a measure to stop subjective "hate speech" from being widely accessible, and discourage readers from the extra effort.

if UN taking a serious control maybe it can affected on bitcoin, if they take extreme measure maybe bitcoin can over, imagine if UN block any attempted connection to blockchain and all the exchanger site, and in the end bitcoin will become priceless and it will just act as usual coin for playing games, because we cant store or exchange it to fiat

a temporary Chaos in the world, not only in bitcoin and then after a short time we will move on to a decentralized internet and things will be  a lot better than the current situation.

Necessity is the mother of invention

so i hope they do this. Cheesy

As long as UN will not interfere like ICANN is doing now as the other is saying that we should have a freedom in the internet and not be controlled by any organization.

Internet was being controlled anyway. If you think that nobody is observing your actions and collecting your data on the internet then you are a fool. We can use vpn and proxies to avoid that but it is just one hell for another...

So what is the IP of this forum so I can bookmark it since today and safeguard it preciously until doom day comes as being talked here?

Personally I hope to not see that day to come to us. We have always TOR which can help us access websites which are blocked from UN. I don't think UN can do anything to .onion websites and I am sure bitcointalk.org will create a .onion website if such day ever arrives.

another option i was thinking. was the OP going to repost to promote namecoin as the alternative domain name database. its been around for years, but unsure if it has stayed uptodate

It can just be used as a measure to stop subjective "hate speech" from being widely accessible, and discourage readers from the extra effort.

That's also not quite true.  They control only the handing out of top-level domain groups, not the identification of specific domains, nor the resolving of domains to IP addresses.  Your ISP generally controls DNS resolution, but you can set your DNS server to whatever you like.  Google's are free, as are many more.  Or set your own up.

Also, any changes to the existing rules require a unanimous vote. Everyone gets veto.

I think somehow but not entirely affect bitcoin, they need to control the market and user even the miners to really affect bitcoin.  There are lots of ways to nullify the control of UN since there are far more talented freelancer than those professionals working in a group.  If problem in accessing domains and ip occur, am sure this will be solved by people who are sneaky enough to use their brains to nullify the control of UN.

As long as they don't block bitcoin-service website, bitcoin full nodes or internet port for default full nodes, i think there won't be any major impact.
If you worry about your privacy, maybe you can use VPN/proxy/tor/anything which can secure your connection.

Also, as long as government don't block website which allow us to see IP of an website, there's still way to access your favorite website as well.

This body has absolutely zero control over any of that.

I don't think it will effect bitcoin anyway.. bitcoin is not something harmful for UN or any other nation and country.. bitcoin is just a currency and payment source.

I was going to bring up namecoin after your first post as an alternative if the worst did happen, but you beat me to it apparently. That said, if it hasn't kept up-to-date, it can be brought up to date. I think what's needed most is mozilla or another browser to start recognizing namecoin addresses to help make it more popular.

The UN can do what they want, but there will always be people circumventing whatever are put in place to restrict people's freedom to

communicate and trade freely. Bitcoin has opened the door for p2p global trade and nothing will bring down that. Global surveillance has

been done for many years now, and some of the biggest companies in the world has been contributing efforts to do that.. eg. Cisco,

Microsoft, router manufacturers, Google etc... the average Joe are just not aware of that.  Roll Eyes ... So this is nothing new.    Shocked
