Is Blockchain technology all that it is cracked up to be?

On October 31, 2008, the then and now pseudonymous inventor of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto published a paper titled "Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System". Contained within it was the design for a technology that would not only make the cryptocurrency work, but also proliferate with ease. The Blockchain was formally introduced to the world.

Fast forward approximately three months, and the technology was implemented as open source code. While Bitcoin took a while to come in to its own as a decentralized digital currency, the merits of the underlying Blockchain technology were immediately apparent. With one fell swoop, the technology provided a solution to some of banking's age old, and previously unaddressed challenges.
